I can't imagine that they will wait till after the Oscars.
Obviously, if it wins a few, and surely it will, there will be renewed and new interest in it, so sales will pick up.
But, sheeshs, will it still be viable by March 23?
That is one quarter of a year in relese, plus the after Ocars effect...if it manages, that will be one heck of a long time in release.
Where are the box office stats for LOTR last week? How strong is it going still?

Gross-to-Date (North America): $272,084,000
Overseas Gross: $412,000,000

Every week it seems to drop off 20-30% in box office takes, pretty normal. Most suspect it will surpass $300 million domestically before it's out of theaters. As for the trailer (its actually longer than a trailer, like 4mins long) I think that'll come out before the Oscars...I doubt they'd wait that long.

"FOTR Reel Change To Take Place In Two Weeks?
2/13/02, 8:05 pm EST - Strider

David writes: While standing in line to see "A Beautiful Mind", my wife and I were chatting with the ticket taker. As this was only a week or so ago, I asked how attendance was holding up for FOTR. She said that it had quieted down considerably, but then added this tidbit: she claimed that a new last reel to FOTR was going to be released "in two weeks". It would contain scenes from TTT as well as footage cut from FOTR."

That is an unfounded rumor and won't come to pass, mark my words.

I am talking about the extra footage for FOTR. They would never release more footage, effectively making it a different movie before or even after the Oscars. It would invalidate its nominations being a different movie, wouldn't you think?

The TTT teaser/preview is a definite though...New Line's been discussing this for a while.

yeah i doubt there will be extra footage, the person working there probably got mixed up with the info, but she did probably know the date that the reels were going to change, so i would say in little over a week, maybe next fri, to give the movie an extra push into oscars

Elledan, you expect the impossible, so I suggest skipping the remaining movies because you will be once again disappointed until you lower your standards and try and look at it as a movie on its own merits, not as something that takes away from the books. It doesn't...they are two seperate things for me.

I just finished reading FOTR and I have to say, I liked the MOVIE better than the BOOK. That's right, this is the first time I've ever said that before. Sure the book was more descriptive and covered some extra scenes, but you can't deny that the movie was 3 hours of sheer briliance.

What about that whole Orc fighting scene at the end of the movie. That was not in the book at all. (I think it might be at the beginning of TTT, but I'm just guessing). You can't tell me the book was more exciting with just the Boromir/Frodo ordeal than the whole fight against the Orcs. It doesn't stack up.

My $.02

You might be correct.

Anyway, the way I see it, the book is near perfection, while the movie itself barely makes it to the rank of the average B-movie. It's that bad.

I think I'll take your advice and skip the rest of the movies. There are enough, and better, fantasy movies.

Which ones?

Because honestly ever fantasy movie I've seen is cheesy and totally overdone to the point of being ridiculous and just silly to watch. I'd be interested in seeing other movies than can succeed in what LOTR did...bring a fantasy world to life that seems real.

Let's make this the offical Two Towers discussion thread, shall we?

Here's some questions I've been pondering as I re-read the book.

1) Will they interlace any scenes of Sam and Frodo traveling to Mordor? They don't show up till the latter half of the book.

2) Do you think Shelob's appearance will be a secret, a la that of the Balrog?

3) Will they show the Ent siege of Isengard - alluded to in the book, but not shown. I wanna see the flood rushing in!

4) The Ents will be CGI, right?

5) Gandalf's final battle with the Balrog and ascent to the white - again, alluded to in the book but not shown in real time. Will the movie be different?

I, for one, found Final Fantasy to be a lot better than FotR. Except for the cheesy ending, of course.

Star Trek First Contact beats the sh!t out of FotR as well.

I found FotR to be 'cheesy and overdone'. Most keyparts were ignored in the script and some scenes where introduced, which together totally ruined the whole story.

I would even go as far as saying that the cartoon version of FotR is better than this movie-version.

I actually liked final fantasy but it wasn't that good IMO. Star Trek I consider to be sci-fi more than fantasy. To me there's a difference between the genres.
How many times have you seen fotr? the second and third times are much better because you aren't concentrating on the books but the movie itself. You seem to be quite snobbish with the whole thing. Please don't mention the cartoon being better :( Now you're just being ridiculous.
I think we should end this now cause it's not going anywhere. You hate it, I love it. End of story :p

Good idea. glen, why don't you change the thread title?

<< Here's some questions I've been pondering as I re-read the book.

Actually I think this has been mentioned before. The movie will go back and forth between the adventures of Sam & Frodo and the other characters. I don't think chopping it down the middle would work for a movie.

<< 2) Do you think Shelob's appearance will be a secret, a la that of the Balrog? >>

Definitely. This is going to be the climax of TTT! I can never see them putting a picture of Shelob in a trailer.

<< 3) Will they show the Ent siege of Isengard - alluded to in the book, but not shown. I wanna see the flood rushing in! >>

They'll definitely capitalize on that I think. I have these pictures in my head of the scale of the whole destruction and I hope they can somehow mimic that on the big screen. Scenes like Ents tossing up huge pieces of rock hundreds of feet into the air in their rage.
As for seeing them in the trailer? I'd say it's a 50/50 change. We may see a few short scenes but I doubt any full body shots.

<< 4) The Ents will be CGI, right? >>

Yes.

<< 5) Gandalf's final battle with the Balrog and ascent to the white - again, alluded to in the book but not shown in real time. Will the movie be different? >>

50/50 chance again. Gandalf says how the encounter was so terrible he didn't want to recount it any further. If they do show anything, I think it will be short...sort of like Gandalf flashback in FOTR to Gwaihir rescuing him off of Orthanc.
Would definitely be sweet seeing some more Balrog action :D

Also, don't forget about the battle at Helms Deep. they spent 3 months filming this battle!!!!

And one of my main questions is...will they have the Huorns in the movie?

I know, but fantasy and sci-fi are quite closely related.

<< How many times have you seen fotr? >>

Once, in the cinema. You don't want to know how miserable I felt after the movie :(

<< the second and third times are much better because you aren't concentrating on the books but the movie itself. >>

I'll try watching it a second time if you insist =)

<< You seem to be quite snobbish with the whole thing. Please don't mention the cartoon being better :( Now you're just being ridiculous. >>

Okay, sorry. So I just wanted to get your attention ;)

In fact, my parents have seen this cartoon when it came out here. My father was a big fan of Tolkien in that time (perhaps it's genetical?). Halfway through they walked out of the cinema. After having read some reviews on this version, I've to admit that it can get much worse than that.

<< I think we should end this now cause it's not going anywhere. You hate it, I love it. End of story :p >>

Okay, I hate it. End of story ;)

Hmm... perhaps 'hate' is not a strong enough word to describe what I feel about this movie.

I am really looking forward to the Two Towers Trailer, but i hope it gets posted on the net also in very good quality. LotR is no longer at any theaters in my area so i don't know how i would get to see it :(

Also, anyone have any new info on the release of the DVD? I can't wait to get a "Legal" copy of the movie. Its amazing how easy it is to get a cam-corder of the movie, or even a "screener" copy. And before i get flamed or tons of PM's... No i am not distributing it or even helping anyone find it. Yes i will buy the DVD as soon as it comes out even though i might have copys of it already.

Milkman, if you look at the statistics, LOTR has an excellent chance to win best picture at the Oscars. If this happens, they will release it to more theaters again. Theaters in your area that showed the movie before might do another limited run when new line releases the TTT preview.
It's hard to say if they'll release it on the net or not...it might be considered an "exclusive" to the theaters only. I bet we see it on that rumored 4 disc dvd release though. But we should see the first official trailer for TTT soon as well, I think April at the very latest. Maybe earlier...

I hope they do rerelease it here, at least one can hope. 3 times at the theater just were not enough! :)

While we are sharing links, here is one that has been watching LotR and has a nice little graph comparing it to other top movies The Numbers. I hope the Oscars breath some life into it so it can beat Harry Potter.

Oh.. and im still hoping for 9 wins at the oscars! :)
