EDIT: Pin-mod help needed.

I have the Thorton 2000+/ECS K7VTA3 from Fry's. The problem is this cpu, unlike another from this same combo, won't take to fsb333. I would like to return this cpu for another but I'm a bit past their 14 day return. They're offering the same combo right now. Uhh... how do they know which Thorton 2000+ I'm returning with a combo? Please don't flame, I don't think this cpu is up to snuff. This cpu shouldn't have any problem running at 333, and Fry's return window of 14 days is just too narrow.
I think after all the AMD processors I've bought this may be the first that's borderline good.

Because the stepping code is on your receipt. If they are doing there job they'll check what the receipt says versus what the proc says. They aren't that stupid....

So... you're going to buy another combo, take the CPU out of it, and return it with the CPU that didn't hit 333MHz FSB? That's not right. :|

Oh, I'm so sorry I offended you. :brokenheart:

As it stands, I'm not going to try to return the cpu, just attempt to up the voltage via pin/socket/wire method. But thanks for judging me. Maybe I should do what others have done and try to pawn it off on someone here on the "For Sale/Trade" forum.
It's not like I tried to up the fsb to 200 and failed. That is searching for the golden fleece. But I don't think my expectations are beyond reasonable. Also, it does operate at 266 just fine.
Lastly, if I had returned it within the 14 days would you have complained then as well? What's at issure here? Are you offended that I would like to circumvent Fry's return policy? Cause that's all I'd like to do. I'm not out to cheat YOU or anyone else. Putz. 🙂 I just love it when someone gives me the chance to use that word. Hehe.

And as for you no longer coming to my assistance, I checked our PMs and back on 03/12/2003 I sent the one and the only pm I've ever exchanged with you and you never replied, so bite me.

1) The K7VTA3 comes with it's system jumpers set to a system speed of 133 - if you don't change it, the system may not run properly at 166, even with PC2700 and a barton. Both JP2 and JP3 need to have pins 2-3 jumpered

2) The CPU may well do 333 fine, it could be your crappy ram that has a problem at that speed.

3) You want to return something that runs just fine at spec within your 14 day window, enjoy yourself on the line. Just don't burn the thing out and then try to return it, please.

4) Fry's records the serial number of both the processor and mobo when you buy it.

I used that same cpu in another k7vta3 and it failed the jp2 and jp3 to pins 2-3 oc. It's not the mem cause that mem did 333 before. It's the cpu, but that's cool cause I'll just + the vcore just as soon as I find my isopropyl to clean off the cpu.

I used the socket mod to where it said 1.675 and my bios now fluctuates from 1.72 to 1.74 at about 50C on medium load.

Of course to run this as a test I used some thermal paste that came with a heat sink.
But on the upside, it does run stable at 333.
