I am so tired of spam and the continuous debate about what to do about it ... the Govt is completely impotent on this issue and I believe users like ourselves can strike back at this menace. How ? Simple ...

a) most spam mails i get list an 800 number to call. Lets us all pick on one or two of these and then hit them with calls. Going out ? Call the 800 number, leave the phone off the hook, and let the scumbag pay for the call .... you get the drift ?

b) if they list an email address, let us post the email address in multiple Usenet forums from where mail-bots can chew on it. Let them taste some spam themselves....

i'm sure there's more imaginative ideas out there ... are some ppl willing to join together and do something ???

cheers

Dee

We need to find some good porn mailing list to sign these spammers up on. Hopefully something that signs them up on several lists with on button pressed.

and why exactly won't it work ...?

I'm not saying this is brilliant stuff that no one ever thought of before, but lets not just discrad an idea without thinking why it will not work ..!

sure its not going to be easy ... nobody thinks it will

but if 800 people call your freephone number and not give you any business at all, that is sure going to hurt ... Ok thats just one spammer, but then one less can't be a bad thing

Where are you going to find 1 let alone 800 people to tie up their own phone line when they go out?

well, now you know why spammers win ... because most people are not only clueless but unwilling to do anything about it ... hope you enjoy your spam .. I dont so I'm going to do something about it !

>> simply put there is more of them then us

that is the most absurd thing I've heard all month ... we the receivers of spam probably outnumber the senders 10,000 to 1 if not more. some of them manage about 100,000 spam mails a day, so it may seem to you like there's an army of them out there, but there isn't

A 1-800 line is a fixed cost line.

It costs around 0.35$ per call here in Canada

Just just calling and hanging up as soon as the take the call would do the same thing as keeping the line busy.

Also, most businesses with 1-800 lines can hang upo when they want. You cannot keep them on the line

The better thign to do would be to start building email systems that work on an ' ONLY ALLOW THESE PEOPLE... ' basis.

That way spam would never get through, you just say, heres a list of my friends emails, only allow them.

Spam emails don't bother me anymore since finding Mailwasher Pro. All spam/possible spam is all listed neatly across all my POP3 accounts (Hotmail and Yahoo Mail included) and the touch of 1 button deletes them all on the respective server.

If you feel like fighting back, the software also allows you to send BOUNCE messages where they look like it came from the intended ISP saying it didn't reach the user (you). Some spammers have scripts that may look for these and take your address off their future lists. I haven't personally found this to decrease my spam count, but it's something you can do to send crap back to them.

hey fixed cost or not, the effect is the same .. (I believe in the US most ppl would pay 5 to 8 cents a minute)
35 cents times 500 or 1500 callers - how long do you think the average spammer can pay that ?

and sure he can hang up ... but first he's got to answer the call, right ? isn't that the spam logic ? just hit the delete key....? at least that levels the playing field a little
