What type of bullcrap do you have to deal with at work?

Mine, not so much as we are a very small local company.

When I worked for another big ISP that was nationwide, boy oh boy did we have politics.

I got so fed up that I quit.

My father is going through some stuff right now. He works for the state and is close to retiring and he just got a new boss who is giving him a hard time. I feel so bad about it. I wish I could do more to help.

Let's discuss office politics.

How bad is it at your work place?

Bad enough that I don't feel confortable speaking about it publicly, nor anyone I work with. :(

Funny, I got an email about "office politics" the other day, from one of my bosses.

it basically sayed, be nice and honest,

it was an extract from:
Workplace Politics Reflections on Personal and Corporate Survival

Weird, the job I'm working at now has absolutely no office politics. I've never heard anything said about the bosses, my co-workers, the product, or the process, since I've been there. Then again I work at a canned cheese factory.

Very little here. Small issues spring up now and then, but nothing that doesn't blow over in a couple days.

Well, other than our boss being completely inept which is ongoing, but he is 400km away most of the time, so we do alright.

None where I work. It's a pretty small company (13 people maybe), and most work in Houston (I work in Michigan).

I hear rather small companies get BIG drama because they're so close-knit and everything becomes everyone's business. Things get too initimate and personal since it's not a huge 1000+ company.

This is the case where I work. Everyone is in everyone else's business, and when someone's in a bad mood, they spread it. If there's an argument about work, one person always runs around complaining to the rest of us.

I survive by doing what's right, and by letting self-destructive people take their BS somewhere else.

It's the opposite here, group of 12, but we do have our disagreements. The key is to not be a total asshole and get offended by someone elses opinion.

I suppose that's definitely possible. Actually I work by myself about 95% of the time, so unless I get into drama with myself, it's a non-issue. ;)

My manager and another developer work an hour away, and I only see them probably once every couple weeks and we're pretty laid back and cool with each other.

I work in the government but fortunately behind a vault door with only one other person, with whom I get along very well. Since I don't have to see people most of the time, I am mostly immune to the politics going on 'outside'. Fortunately, the division chief is VERY laid back, and let's us do our thing in here without any appreciable interference.

I've worked in a place with tons of office politics, and it was NOT fun. Makes it difficult to get up each morning.

There is a smattering of all types of bullsh*t here. Nepotism, unfair hiring practices, cliquy behaviour, departments at war with each other, two-faced backstabbing, favouritism... we have it all.

That the kind of thing you're referring to?

Basically the secret to success here is to be good at your job but not too good, get noticed but also fly under the radar, be a nice guy but don't be "that guy", and choose your alliances carefully.

It's kind of like Survivor: Office, with really stinky bathrooms.

I'm a peon in a company of about 20,000 employees. Locally, being a white male has been nothing but a drawback.

I had a coworker try to tell me to go look for a headphone jack in a remote building because the building manager couldn't find it. I respectfully told her no, I wasn't going to do that. It isn't my job to play hide and seek with lost office equipment. My boss backed me up and told her she could pound sand. Ever since then her posse has hated me.
