Let's be cool guys, the new consoles aren't even out yet!

Guy is obviously a bone defender. I guess if all I wanted to do was switch quickly between football and two and a half men reruns and play games at low definition I would be one, too. hee hee

are you saying he is gay since he likes bone?

As a PC gamer I'm clearly superior and above your pathetic squabbles.

It will be interesting to see how much of a clusterf*ck the launches turn out, I don't expect either one to go smoothly. I also don't think either system is going to resemble the device the companies are actually marketing to people and I'll be interested to see how that turns out.

I'm just waiting for them to be hacked and made to be useful. Oh wait...you can't go online then. Too bad. 😛 Consoles were so much better before the online craze. You want online? Play a PC.

This. I hate that consoles are like PCs now. Release now patch later, if ever, a billion updates a day, forced sign on and need an account to do anything, compatibility issues with TVs and sound systems, licences, installs, and DRM, etc.

Part of the appeal of consoles besides platformers and RPGs not available on PC was the plug and play simplicity. Plug into wall, put game in, press power.

So safe to say consoles are dead in reality.

It is a nice thing and severely overdo that consoles can auto-update now. Presumably a game patch can be released at night.

I hate hate hate turning on my 360 with a new game and it hasn't been on in 6 weeks and I have 20 fking minutes of updates on both the dash oard and then finally the game. It is definitely annoying.

Software is massively more complex than in the SNES days though so it isn't surprising snowy games release with some small bugs (serious ones like gta v had are unacceptable though).

all you have to do is unplug your console from the internet and you will not be prompted for any updates.

I hate when they remove completely inconsequential bugs in single player games.

Things like FF6 vanish + x zone or FF7 w item duplication would be good examples of classic bugs that have become part of the game lore.

God forbid somebody doesn't play the game exactly like you want them to. Can we possibly get any more smug?

That's a minor complaint though next to promoting rushed or lazy products early to make a buck, then patch later and "finish" the game only if it sold the right amount.

I want the next Fallout. Unfortunately they release those for PC so it is hard to willingly get it on console.

I tried ONE crossplatform RPG this last gen on 360... going to be hard to get me to do it again. If load times are vastly improved then I'm sold.

What about gameplay bugs that prevent you from finishing the game?

You mean like Pokemon X/Y save file glitch on a ROM release? /chuckle

I don't recall any major game breaking bugs on ROM media prior to online consoles. Games were thoroughly tested.

I would be in bliss if I could get Fallout 4 in my hands right now.

I don't, either. Even the terrible, just terrible Atari 2600 games all "worked". But, really, the games were incredibly simple with far fewer lines of code and a ton less going on. As a game's complexity increases it becomes exponentially more difficult to go through all the reasonable paths of action for the game.

This makes testing far more difficult. As such, I am positive testing is a much larger portion of most games these days. I'm therefore okay with some esoteric bugs, like a guy falls through the floor if he's wearing one special kind of armor and has exactly 35% health or something silly. The big bugs--those known about prior to release (Like the gta 5 garage bug)--should never be on the shelves, though.

I'm including PS2 in that as well. PS2 was an offline system. Are you saying PS2 games aren't complex?

PS2 is FAR more complex than PS4 or XBO to program for. Yet I'm not aware of any PS2 discs with game breaking bugs. PS2 is more complicated than 360 to program for, yet I see 360 games being patched left and right.

Yet I suspect we will see numerous PS4 and XBO games with emergency patches.

Has nothing to do with games being "more complex". Honestly not much has changed from PS2 besides more models, bigger textures, more objects on screen for most typical games.

And I'm talking game breaking logic flaws, not minor things like objects randomly falling through the floor because of precision issues in the physics integrator. The former should NEVER see release.

Its laziness, knowing they can patch later, and bloated suits calling the shots instead of the developers. Rush rush rush, make me money now, fix it later maybe.

The consoles aren't more complex, the games are. It's fairly easy to see. Do I love my old games? Yes. Do I love my new games? Yes

Some examples of old glitches

Pokemon Red was full of bugs. On top of larger things like Missingno and trade duplications, you have a whole bunch of balance issues. You would rather stuff like this not be fixed? Here is an even bigger list of glitches.

Ocarina of Time had tons of glitches that range from amusing to gamebreaking.

Super Mario 64 glitches, including freezing.

ALttP glitches

Super Marios Bros had a few notable glitches as well:
When the player gathers exactly 128 lives, then loses a next life, they will receive an instant Game Over.

In the end of swimming levels, there's a one block sized space above the Warp Pipe that leads to the exit. If the player crouches as Super Mario and then swims into the space while still crouching, Mario should walk backwards and get stuck in the far right side of the wall. After pulling off this glitch, it is impossible to move

Oracle of Ages;
If the game is saved before rescuing Princess Zelda, Link will get stuck in the final sequence, and it is not escapable.

If Link happens to open a map of multi-layered dungeons, be careful to not change the floors until Link has checked all the floors. A glitch may occur and freeze the game because Link's position will be offscreen and the coordinates will be messed up badly.

I played a PS2 game where if you didn't beat the boss in a certain amount of time, the game would freeze and sometimes delete your save.

Soul Calibur 3 had a major game save glitch http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/927089-soulcalibur-iii/faqs/40424

Those are just some examples I remembered. I'm sure there are many, many more. Gamebreaking bugs aren't anything new. However, games are much more complex now and have many more people playing them.
