Water level looks a little low for May. Here's when the water is pretty high - I was there the day this guy shot the video; the river was amazing. If I have time next week, I'll upload some videos. I was teaching my younger son that day; those are in milder sections of the river.

I'm not sure which one it was as we arrived late and the park is immense! Actually now that I recall there weren't any statues, just a boulder/rock with the placard.

It reminded me of what Medieval times might have been like with all of the stone work.
 
Well to give an update. I *AM* going. Exact date not determined. Probably in June, 5 or 6 day trip total including travel days. Haven't decided if I'm going tent or trailer, thought I'm leaning toward trailer.

One other AT'er is also thinking of going (witholding name until they state it themselves here out of curtiousness). So....

Any other AT'ers intersted in going? Just a thought I'm throwing out there.... An AT camping trip. Letchworth will never be the same again. LOL.
 
The US needs to stop screwing around in the ME and do some kind of CCC program again IMHO.

But things are intertwined of course, all over the world.

That would be me. I hope to be mobile by early June. My tow vehicle just got taken out of commission (t-boned by someone running a red light). Hopefully it is all repaired soon and I can de-winterize my camper.

This could be a fun trip - but I am kinda scared. The last time I joined a "few people" on an internet forum for a camping outing it turned into a 30 family rally!

I go camping to get away from people!

I *might* swing by the park if I'm not busy whatever weekend that is. Plus, depending on what the water levels are, I might consider a trip upstream to the lower falls, then down through the gorge (kayaks).
 
I know I'll be taking my kayak. I'm not a "rapid" kayaker though, calm lakes and streams for me.

You can check the gauge on americanwhitewater.org - gauge is for the Genesee river at Portageville. If above 10.5 feet, spray skirt probably recommended. 11 feet, very very strongly recommended. Below 11 feet, and it's a fairly easy trip for someone who has been in a kayak a few times - perfect whitewater to learn on. I believe a helmet is required in the gorge. (I just use my kids' old bike helmets.) Life jackets are an absolute; and you have to sign your life away at the Main Building.
 
Wow....I'm curious, but don't want to bite off more than I can chew with that. I hope there are some more placid waters to b yak in...
 
You can judge from many of the kayaking videos that are on youtube. Here's one at 10.3'. You can avoid the majority of the waves. I just watched this for the first time; at some point in the video, he was trying to surf; and you can see from toward the end of the video, that he's pretty new to it. 😛

My son and I ran into these guys in the gorge one afternoon.

If you can see the difference from 10.1 to 11.95, imagine 13.5. Coworker and I went at that level (they close the gorge to kayakers at 14'); as we stood at the put in, I think we were both hoping the other would change his mind. That ride: holy shit. A helmet cam would have been pointing at blue sky one moment, then at a wall of water the next. The waves in a couple of sections were immense. The video doesn't do justice for the roar of that water at 12'. But, I think you get the idea of how fast you can go. I guided a huge propane tank (the size that supplies a house) down the river; I think it was about 11' when I did it; lots of fun. The propane company was going to give me $100 for it; all I had to do was get it out of the gorge. Unfortunately, on the way to my car, I didn't realize I was rolling it through poison ivy. I left it a few hundred yards from the parking lot; never went back to get it. (I would have hauled it on a trailer - way too big for even the van.) 🙂

Dates booked! June 19 - 24th, the other AT member will be there 19-22. There's still a site near ours for any other AT ers LOL.

I would come hang out as it's literally a 15 min drive for me. However I'll be in Grand Cayman that week
 
I may if I have a chance - crunch time at school at that time; lots to do for graduation.
