The supra is one of the most overrated cars ever. I'm not saying it's a bad car.... as it is a nice car, but it's expensive, and it's really not that fast, and the only reason that there's so much hype about it is cause it's from Japan. If it had been made in Europe or the USA, it wouldn't have the "See - imports are fast!" connotation that makes it so popular.

The engine takes an incredibly amount of abuse. That is why people would like to see it

I think they'll bring the nameplate back someday. It's a name people still talk about, so a new car wearing a Supra badge would have a built-in recognition factor. They'd be dumb to just let it go unused.

They would just have to make sure it would live up to peoples' high expectations.

I don't think they would use the IS platform for a "new Supra". Did you forget that is shares the old engine with a GS300 now? If anything, it would most likely use the GS430 engine as a basis. However, that current engine does not deal well with turbo's. Some people ended up doing Supra swap into GS430 instead.

I share your sentiment, NFS4. My Supra is 16 years old and when/if she finally gives up the ghost, I would definately give another one consideration. As for the Supra being overrated, it is commonly held to be the most reliable sports car around. It is also a nice looking, comfortable car with a lot of amenities without entering the luxury segment. Similar to the Prelude, but RWD and fast.

Any links to a prototype?

Oh I have to agree with Tyler (cringe). The downfall of the Supra back then was the price tag vs other cars back then. Its still one of my favorite cars that I wish I could own.

Umm, didn't the Supra use a variant of the same 3.0 liter I-6 in the current GS300/IS300?

It's not like the current 3.0 is a "bad" engine.

Toyota needs to bring the Supra back, and Mazda needs to bring the RX7 back. And Honda/Acura needs to revamp the NSX! :)

The curent 3.0 is the same as the Supra's 3.0. They are already developing a new Supra supposedly, whether it comes to the US I have no idea. The 350z (and upcoming RX-8) has sparked new interest in Jap. sports cars so I'd say it's a good possibility.

Screw the NSX. It's too overpriced.

Honda needs a $30,000 - $40,000 sports car in the same ilk as the RX7/350Z/Supra

RX8 :D

The RX8 is NOT the RX7's replacement. Mazda is still working on a new RX7

My dream is for Toyota to scrap their stupid Scion ugly-car factory and put that money towards developing the new Supra. :D

it was 35k for a TT car that looked like sex and is realiable as all hell with a lot of potential, if the germans or americans can make a car that does the same thing, then that car would be golden too

If the IS300 engine is the same as the one in the late Supra, why aren't people turbocharging it and getting 800hp?

I don't think that an 800HP IS300 or GS300 is really that appealing myself...

Very good chance IMHO.
- Need something to challenge 350Z
Also, they are planning to bring back the FJ (yeah - not quite an Fj40) and they bought back the MR2 (Spyder -I liked the previous gen better though)

Just sit back and take a look at how extensive their vehicle lineup is. They obviously have not been that conservative - How many SUV's do they have available: Land Cruiser, Sequioa, 4Runner, Highlander, don't forget the Rav4 too.

Because nobody wants to take a 30k sports sedan and turn it into an all out drag car? There are some 400 HP IS300's out there, seems like more than plenty HP for most people...........

+ RX330, GX470, LX470 :p

Toyota has a whole SLEW of models. The only thing they're missing is a sports car.

Considering that the new 350Z is less powerful than the previous TTZ, I don't think Toyota needs to make a car to have a "Z killer". Their MkIV Supra is a 350Z killer, and my 91TTZ is a 350Z killer.

It's a sad thing... times have changed and currently the market will no longer bear a high end sports car from these companies. What they can do is make an affordable car like the 350Z, and make it as fast as possible. The TTZ and the Supra were over $40k when they were out. You can get a brand new 350Z for $27k. You get a lot for your money, but you don't get a TTZ or Supra killer.
