Edit:
I guess it was a firewall issue... I just forgot PeerGuardian was a firewall of sorts. It must have updated and for some reason had local network IPs as something to block. Go figure...

I have a laptop and a desktop on the same network, the desktop wired and the laptop wireless.

I've been using them extensively together (the desktop as a file server as well as using it with remote desktop) and a few months ago (maybe 3-4 actually) it started having problems.

When I first started, I could just remote desktop using the computer names (i.e. \\desktop or \\laptop), but for some reason that stopped working. I thought it was strange, but I found out I could still just use the IPs to connect so, I just did that (i.e. \\192.1681.2 etc...).

But just yesterday, they took it a step further. It actually started right after a power flicker (you know, when some things turn off and other things turn on, but there's definately a short outage). I stopped being able to remote desktop, but I could still access my shared files. Then a couple hours later, I couldn't access the shared files anymore either.

I reset both computers and the router but that didn't help. Both computers are still on the network and able to access the internet. Other computers on the network are able to connect to either computer (I hooked up a 3rd wireless computer and I ping'd back and forth between the three), but when trying to ping between the two problem computers, I would never get a response. The laptop would show "Request timed out" while the desktop would show "Destination host unreachable."

I haven't installed any new programs and I tried turning off any firewall/virus scan software to see if they were blocking it, but that didn't work. I can actually remote desktop the desktop through my real IP (not the one from the router).

I have no idea what might have caused it or any way to fix it. It seems weird that just two computers would stop interfacing. Anyone have any ideas?

Oh... They're both running Windows XP. Let me know if any other information might be helpful.
