The Sigma 30 EX does show that Sigma can make fast optical designs that perform well wide-open. There are plenty of other examples of fast lenses that are much better than the Canon 50mm f/1.4 wide open (and despite the feelings of some, the Nikon equivalent). The point is just that this new lens is an opportunity for Sigma to raise the bar from its currently low point in the specific 50mm focal length.

I bought the Sigma 30/1.4 and it wouldn't focus wide open for the life of it. I sold it and have since had a bad taste in my mouth for Sigma.

We Canonites call the Siggy 30 1.4 the "lens lottery". When you buy one, it may or not be in calibration. And of course it's returned to the store or sent to Sigma for service.

umm... we say that about ALL the sigma's... it's a crap shoot, hah. One reason why I nearly jumped to a D80.

I've had similar troubles. They don't seem to occur on other mounts, just on Canon. Here's hoping their AF protocol implementations on Canon have improved.

It's not just Canon mount version of the lens that suffer from not focusing correctly. Same problem occured in every mount of cameras though It's gottn bettter as revision 2 came along.

There is a second revision of the 30/1.4?
