Lemme tell you a little story.

On the 6th of this month I purchased a new Whirlpool double oven. Had the oven delivered and I installed it, with help of course. After the installation I fired the oven up to let it go through it's burn in cycle. After about an hour I went through my kitchen to the laundry room and noticed what I thought was far too much heat coming off the oven. I stopped and felt of the upper door and it was fine, a bit warm but not much, then I touched the bottom door and nearly seared myself. To say that the bottom door was hot would be an understatement. I thought it was odd but maybe due to the burn in cycle the oven was going through. I got out my manual and read it but found nothing about excess heat on the doors. Still thinking it might be related to the first burn in I let it go. A few days later my GF came over and was making some blueberry muffins in the upper oven and then decided to make some brownies in the lower. She started the lower oven up and let it pre heat while she mixed up the brownies. When she started to put the brownies she commented on how hot the oven door was. I walked into the kitchen and touched the door.....it was once again hotter than hell. The next day I called Whirlpool and told them about my concerns and that I was especially concerned since I will be getting married soon and we are planning on having children. They said they would send a service person out to check the oven. Well that happened today and while the guy was here he took measurements on the doors after both the upper and lower ovens had been on at 400 degrees for an hour. The top door was 92 degrees, the bottom was 187. 187!!! He thought that was hot and called Whirlpool safety. They told him the allowable temp for the oven door was 202 degrees. 202 freaking degrees!!! They then told him that since it was operating within spec there is nothing they would do and hung up. The service guy said he was sorry and there was nothing he could do and left. I then called Whirlpool back and told them again how dangerous I thought this was and that the oven door temp was unacceptable. The tech guy on the safety line kept telling me there was nothing that could be done. I asked to speak to a manger but they were all gone for the day. I then asked to leave a voicemail for management and he let me do so. I told them this was unacceptable, that I expected a call from them by 5pm tomorrow with an explanation as to why the oven door was allowed to be so hot, that I would not allow an oven that's doors get that hot to remain in my house, and that they would either do something to correct the problem or the oven would come out of the wall and go back to where it was purchased.

Am I wrong in thinking 187 degrees is too hot? I mean come on....that's ridiculous and very dangerous. If they don't do something about this the oven is gone and I will never in my life purchase anything made by Whirlpool.

Seems a little high, but I'd have to check other manufacturers' specs to see overall what the average is.

I agree it's awfully hot, especially for little hands. Since reading your post, I went to check my oven door (just baked pizza at 425 degrees F) and my oven door was 175. Mine is an older gas range (about 9 years) and I never really though about how hot it gets, I just keep my kids out of the kitchen while we are cooking. I would wait to hear Whirlpools' explanation.

most ovens are pretty hot...you just never really notice because they are down so low...I hope Whirlpool does do something, although I am not sure there is much they could do

Well after doing some research I found that Underwriters Laboratories say that a lower oven door that is between 1-3 feet off the floor is allowed to get to a maximum of 202 degrees. That's just nuts!!! Whirlpool is within those specs by WTF? I can't believe they haven't had their asses sued over something like this multiple times. I'm honestly shocked......
