Let my Little girl drive the suv today

My 9 year old has been commenting lately on how easy it is to drive. Mind you, she never has before. Just on little play cars and video games. So I decided to let her steer while we drove around the block. She did pretty good, but was scared to death and worried the whole time. When we finished, I think she had a new appreciation of what driving actually entails. She doesn't think it's easy anymore and said she can wait. I just wanted to get that out of her system, I know how I was at that age!

My dad used to let me sit on his lap and steer the car or truck. There wasn't much to hit, though, as we lived in the country where most of the roads were dirt and few people had cars. :Q

Surprised no one has replied "You stupid moron, that's totally unsafe."

Heh, she'll probably have her license before me.

:D Seriously, I think you did the right thing if she really does have a more "mature" view of driving in general. Hopefully, she won't be another obituary shortly after getting her license.

How you came to that conclusion is beyond me. Step away from the crack pipe and hand over your license to post. ;)

Thats exactly what my reasonning was. If I taught her now that driving wasn't something to be taken lightly she would better appreciate it as a privilage not a right.

In a few days she'll start to relax about it and want to drive again. It's going to make the next 5-6yrs (before permit) that much longer.

Doubt it. You basically demonstrated to your 9 year old that it is not easy to steer an SUV around, that's it. Her conclusion is that she does not have the manual skill to drive an SUV and that it's not as easy as it looks. This teaches her NOTHING about the dangers of driving, how people can get killed if they screw up, and that it's important not to drive defensively and not engage in dangerous driving activities. All she knows is that it's not easy to steer a car by turning the wheel.

On the other hand, by allowing your daughter to drive around the block, you seriously endangered the lives of innocent bystanders as well as surrounding private property...which definitely reflects poor judgment on your part. On another day, you could have posted something like: "I let my little girl drive my SUV and some other car hit us, the shoulder belt broke my daughter's neck because she's not tall enough, and now she's quadriplegic." But don't worry...I don't think you're as bad as those parents who leave their kids in the car when it's 90 degrees outside.

Lighten up. Nobody got hurt. If you go through life worrying about every little thing, your kids are going to live one sheltered, unfulfilling childhood.

Yeah, you're right. I think we should lower the legal driving age to 9, just so long as we have a parent right there to steer the car in the right direction. Suppose a car was coming in the opposite direction at 30 miles and hour and the little girl were to accidentally turn the wheel to the left (because kids think driving involves turning the steering wheel left and right, left and right)...that would result in a serious head-on collision, not to mention serious damage to both vehicles...and given the ~1 second reaction time required by the father, I doubt he'd be able to grab the wheel and reverse the car's direction in time. The problem is that people don't think of the potential consequences of their actions and every now and then things get f@cked up. It's only then that people regret their actions.

Good argument. Nobody got hurt, therefore, it's okay. See my example above, smart guy. If YOU go through life not worrying about things that can harm your children, your kids will turn out to be drug addicts, child molesters, prostitutes, and serial killers (or a combination thereof). I've seen so many incompetent parents and how screwed up their kids turn out...then the parents wonder gee, "how come my kid is so screwed up? I don't understand!!"..and they blame peer pressure, the public schools, etc. In reality, they were just god-awful parents who made lousy decisions, failed to engage in basic parental duties (like watching out for the safety of their kids), etc...and the worst part is that they didn't even know what lousy parents they were. I think I'm fortunate in that my parents didn't screw up with me, which is why I'm alive and I'm not a drug addict, a child molesting priest, or a serial killer. I hope to god that you're not one of those half-asked parents that I described, but somehow I have my doubts.

My dad always used to let me sit on his lap and steer since I was 4 or 5. When I was 12, I tried driving a manual Peugoet 504, around a small street.
