About 1 1/2 months ago my daughter's 250w Powersupply started smoking. I investigated this further to find out the powersupply was sparking. Thank god we found this before it cought our house on fire. Well over this timeframe this is what I had to replace.

Case/Powersupply - SX1030b, $79@Newegg
Motherboard - Abit BE6-II v2.0 (for me, her Abit BE6), $75
Memory - Crucial 256MB PC133 CA2, $0 Under Warranty
Hard Drive - IBM Deskstar 15GB 7200rpm, $0 checking if under warranty
DVD-ROM - Samsung 12X, $58@Shantech
Floppy Drive - Teac, need to verify still
Total Cost so far = $225 + Shipping, Total time = 6 + hours and still going.

Hope this steers you away from the DEER powersupplies.

$79 for that SX1030B is a good price :)

Thoose Deer PS always looked very "cheesy" to me.

How ironic, my 300watt deer PS just died on Saturday......I'm going to get a 300watt enermax to replace it.
It always made super high tone (15khz+) screetching sounds whenever I moved the mouse or what not......now the Enermax doesn't make a sound.
I dont tihnk it harmed my system at all though, no data corruption, and no win2k instabilities :)

Eeek! I'm using an old 250W Deer PSU to power my LAN machine right now. Luckily I ordered myself an Antec 350W PSU for Xmas, so I will relegate this 300W Enhance PSU to my LAN machine... I always thought Deers were sorta fishy.

This is not the first time I've heard of this regarding DEER psu's. Similiar problems have been reported in other forums for years now. Actually, I've never had a problem with my 250w DEER, however admittedly, that particular machine in never really stressed.

I've never seen one blow up or catch fire, but I have seen 2 smoke. One a little and one quite a bit. I remember wondering if these things had the potential to start a house fire

wo0t, my first post.
Welp I had a deer 300w psu, it was rated for 10Amps on the +12V line.
I was using it to power an 86w peltier. (2nd psu)
One day I booted up, and saw a BIG blue spark, followed with some smoke come from the psu.
I immediatly pulled the powercords.
Turns out the psu blew the fuse, and melted something.
It had been running fine for almost 2 months with the peliter eating at it.
Luckily nothing was ruined.
darn Deer psu,
I like my HEC 350w I have now, and Enermax's are nice but $$$.

i have a deer 300, and so do several of my friends. i've never seen a problem with the deer units, and neither have they. i have seen enermaxs and antecs smoke, though. yeah, antec and enermaxs are better powersupplies, but some of thier products fail. i don't call either a crappy company. in the same vein, i wouldn't characterize a company as making bad products just because 11 people have had problems with them.

Up until this happend to me, I really didn't think about the safety of my computers powersupply. I guess I just assumed that computer powersupplies would have to meet certain standards that would almost guarantee not to catch fire or send sparks/flame out about 2 inches from the back of the powersupply. I haven't really noticed what powersupplies I've used in the past, but I do know this. I will never buy a DEER Powersupply in my life again unless is has been blessed my the O'Mighty himself. What's interesting is that I've never seen or heard of a problem with a Dell, IBM or Gateway's powersupply (Let me know if you have). Does anyone know the brands their using?

EdipisReks - I understand your position. So, I tried to follow up with some facts (BBB, Local News, etc.) for you and everyone elses, but I can't find the company's information to act as a starting point for my research. This was not the case when researching the Antec, Emermax, Sparkle, Enhance, etc. powersupplies. Do you know the company's information (address, web site, email, phone, etc.) so I could investigate this matter further? Also, I would love to get my money back for the powersupply and hopefully the parts I had to replace.

Thanks all for your feedback! :)

You guys got me thinking about my 50.00 case psu, its a 300 watt no name, question i have in your opinions, what would be the "best" and also the "cheapest" 300-350-400 watt psu to buy for a AMD tbird 900 @ 1000?

I am only running the cpu - 2 cpu fans - and motherboard from mine now.Everything else is powered by a second PSU

Sorry man. :(

I had a power supply blown up myself. Fried my mobo, all the IDE devices, the CPU and the RAM. By some miracle the the PCI devices somehow survived. :p

I don't think mine was a DEER though, but one that's even worse. >_<

I don't know, but everyone post about the Evermax, Antec & Enlight (I think that's the correct spelling). Prices start about $32 and go up. I would get a good one for now and furter upgrades if possible.

Bagheera: You never no, it might be an OEM from Deer and it just wasn't labled. Also, so far I didn't test my SMC NIC or SB Live Sound Card. Those might be toasted!

I've been running seti for 9 months straight (stressing it like crazy) on my main system with a Deer 300W and had no problems. Guess they aren't all bad.

BTW SETI is the most fun ever check out the distributed computing forum for more info.

I must be cursed, my only 2 power supplies that have lasted over the years were a Deer300watt and an Enermax.
I've been through 3 Antec PSU's in a year, one 300 watter fried My Mobo, P3, and AIW, another The Fan died, and it Overheated and Smoked, took out a HD, DVD-Rom, Burner, and 3 Panaflo Fans. The 3rd one just started coming on at random, and the Voltages were all over the road, 5 volt would Dip as low as 3.5 and Spike as far as 6. I know my AC is good, I keep a Line Voltage meter in line with my SmartUPS 2400, and a Furman AR-1255, and it stays at a constant 117 Volts, and a constant 60Hz.
A bad batch of Antecs maybe??
On the other Hand, my 300 Watt Deer (3/12 years old now) is on my P3 933 Logic Audio Computer (with a ton of Peripherals attached) and not a Hiccup! The lowest the 5 Volt Rails Dip to are 4.95 Volts, and the VIO stays constant as well.
My Current 1.2 gig DDR T-Bird Rig(@1.4gig) has a Cheapo AMD Approved HEC Power Supply, it works great, and stable! With a decent Enermax i'm sure I'd be able to overclock a little more, and get past 140 FSB.
Antec Tech Support/RMA is Non-Existant!!
