Let me pick your brains....HP DesignJets....

I have a HP DesignJet 750C with Dell Poweredge acting as a print server. I have a very large data set to plot...over 160MB when spooled. The printer has the maximum amount of memory (71MB)...I am continually losing the data and it will just print part of it.

We are printing tifs with a design file overlayed through Microstation SE. What should I check or what kinds of ideas do you guys have for me? If there are any questions...just post them so we can figure this out.

Is it even possible to plot out such a large data set to this plotter?

We use IPLOT at work, it feeds the file in at whatever rate you specify and won't lose data by overfilling the memory. It was/is sold by Intergraph, don't know if it went over to Bently as part of the Inroads sale. I think it's a bit pricey (but a real real slick package). Otherwise I don't know how to help you.

You may want to check HP to see if they have any utility to do this. Windows 2000 has a few settings you may want to mess around with - 98 may have that also but i can't check it out. In Win2k, Under Printers, right click on the printer and go to properties..try printing directly to printer. This may stop it from loosing data, but you won't be able to use the app while it is printing. I don't know much about plotting however.

You should try adjusting this on your computer, and if that doesn't work try adjusting it on the server. I'm not sure what will work the best.

You can plot in different ways to the DesignJet plotters. One way is that all info must fit in memory before plotting. This sounds like the file you are printing. Another way to send data to the plotter is in strips which is what you need. What you need to do is create and RTL file this is the only way you will be able to get your plot complete. I've never used MicroStation just write software that talks to DesignJets. If you can do that with your software you could buy a new DesignJet they have Hard Drives.
