Let me introduce you to Checker

We bought him a couple of days ago. I have a couple of questions since this is my first dog. He's a 3 month old male Pomeranian named Checker. We purchased him from the pet store.

1 - I was told to feed him a mixture of wet and dry food made for puppies. However, my friend who has had dogs for many years told me to use just dry food for now. I gave the dog dry food today and he didnt want to touch it. When I gave him wet food we ate it all.

2 - When we're not home during the day, would you recommend leaving him in a cage or in an isolated room. We've been on vacation this week so we've been home playing with him most of the day. We're thinking about putting him in the kitchen and just barricading him from entering the living room. I didnt want to put him in a cage, I would feel too bad.

My friends have some baby Poms right now, and they are the cutest things alive.
The male is really cool, the mother needs squashed under a tire.

HAHA...I probably won't hear the end of this I guess. My friends wondered why in the world I would get a Pom. We live in a small house and we didnt want a big dog. Checker is fine for us and he loves barking at ppl when they walk by.

We have a 120lb.+ Lab and a Sheltie.
I never thought I was a "little dog" person. The Sheltie cinched that up.
I love the little shyt, but she's all the reasons why I don't like little dogs.
She's stupid, to boot.

You dont wanna know. It's as much as what a breeder wants. We tried getting it through a breeder, but they ask questions as if I was in an interview. I understand their concerns and all, but damn!!! My friends told me not to get a dog through a pet store, but I was like fvck it. This one is AKC registered and came from a breeder. How did the breeder even make money? Did he/she sell it for cheap and the pet store charges more? I would assume so.

I don't generally care for pomeranians, but he is cute. I've had small dogs (a pug and a maltese) for 6 years now so maybe I can help.

1 - I agree with your friend about giving him dry food, but if sounds like he's gotten used to soft food so he's unwilling to try the dry. I would mix both the dry and the soft together for a day or so and gradually decrease the amount of soft food until he's only eating the dry food. Trust me, you do not want to be feeding soft food while housebreaking!

2 - Whether you keep him in a crate or an isolated room depends on how long you're gone during the day. Small dogs are typically harder to housebreak due to the fact they have small bladders. If it's only a few hours I would stick with a crate. But, if it's longer than that I would isolate him to an area with no carpet. Just put a puppy pad on the floor and with any luck he'll use that.

If it makes you feel any better, my husband took a lot of heat from his friends when I got our maltese. He actually didn't want a lot to do with Brody (our maltese) at first but now he says he's the smartest dog we've ever had.
