i remember watching bush say this during the first debate, and i was wondering WHO was he talking to? who would interrupt the president during the presidential debate?

i didn't pay too much mind to it, but now they are saying that bush might have had an earpiece talking to his advisers. i'm thinking they must be a left wing twist to the story, but who did bush's camp say he was talking to?

From what I've read, Jim Lehrer was making some hand signal, apparently to mark that 30 seconds was nearing. But, I believe the lights had not yet come on so I'm not sure on that.

Perhaps the voices from his implant were telling him something.

cough_partisan hack_cough.....

Nope.

Tell me, bozack. Are you denying that Bush has ever used an earpiece during speeches?

PHANTOM VOICE: The French are going to provide advice...

PRESIDENT BUSH: Listen, the French are going to provide great advice. President Chirac has got good judgment about the Middle East, and he understands those countries well. The French are going to work together to put out a U.N. Security Council resolution that sends a clear signal the free world is united in helping Iraq. And those are great contributions, for which I am grateful, and so is my nation.
Hope that helps.

i think they should clarify who he was talking to before this get's out of hand. i really hope he wasn't using an earpiece, and i guess an argument he has iin his defense is that having the earpiece obviously didn't help him, so if he had one, he would have done better! :)

No, although he did have the often-commented-on
bulge under his jacket during the debate.

Do you think he was wearing a flak jacket?

There's also this video from CNN:

I posted that in another thread up here, too.

That's supposedly an actual capture, no modifications or voiceovers added.

I doubt it - the entire facility was, I'm sure, completely secured by the Secret Service. I know President Reagan used to wear Kevlar raincoats 20+ years ago, and I'd have to assume that, even if President Bush was wearing Kevlar, it was something built into his suit jacket, as opposed to a separate, rigid vest.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying this bulge was a radio receiver - I have no idea.

My take on "Let me finish!" is this:

President Bush was, after the first 15 minutes or so of the debate, completely flustered and off his game. Particularly toward the end, he appeared to be unraveling to some degree.

On several occasions, President Bush didn't use all of his allocated time to respond to questions, so Jim Lehrer, at some point, had to say, "Okay," and turn to Sen Kerry for a response (if applicable), or move on to the next question. It looked to me as though President Bush perceived that Jim was about to do this (whether or not it was true), and so he demanded more time.

I would think I would have a hard time working with an earphone, and that it would just be a distraction, but I guess if President Bush had worked with one before, he might be able to use it productively. I have no clue whether he used one in the debate, and I'm happy to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he didn't. I will say, though, that he seemed really off-kilter and surprisingly unprepared for the debate, which I found most surprising.

I only heard the wmv file but it sounds strange....where is the garbled audio coming from.

Anyhow, as it relates to bush wearing an earpiece, I could understand why both would wear one. National security would deem that the potus be informed of key evac situations if the need arises.

Nah, that sounds weak.

Well, it seems to me that having that echo in your head would be confusing as heck if he is, indeed, listening to a pre recorded speech.

Don't really think there's much more to it.

Unless he was embalmed several years ago and he's really a puppet from that new movie.

These guys read from teleprompters too.

Again, nothing here to me.

Finally, if he had an earpiece and still did such a lousy job then he out to ditch it because he cannot perform any poorer in the next debate.

I think we'd know more, too, if Lehrer was motioning if the Bush campaign hadn't been so transfixed on having fixed camera shots.

now that you mention it, the fact of him having an earpiece for emergency reasons is not far fetched. it's a little unrelated but i remember an episode of 24 where palmer had to leave a debate because he was told over his ear piece of a crisis in the nation.

now, if indeed he did have an earpiece, it is starting to seem to me that he was being coached. i think we need a response to this from both jim lehrer and the white house spin doctors! that earpiece should NOT have been used unless there was a crisis, if there even was an earpiece :)

If he had an earpiece to inform him of evacuations and emergencies. Where was his earpiece on Sept. 11? :/

Even without the bleed through, that White House audio shows Bush talking with huge gaps between each sentence. That's scary. Also, that outdoor conference where he screws up the name and then gets it right looks pretty bad too.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news...-newsconference.v.smil

I remember seeing some comment on another blog (Eschaton?) about Bush wearing an earpiece during press conferences and being fed answers. I think it was a joke or idle speculation. Well, if you watch the press conference starting at about 13:23, Bush is going through a list of names of Al Qaeda terrorists they have caught and he stumbles over the name of Ramzi Binalshibh, eventually calling him Ramzi Alshibh. He jokingly apologizes to Ramzi if he got his name wrong and then, at 13:32, he looks down and to his right intently for about 2 seconds, like he is listening to something, and looks up and says "Binalshibh, excuse me." As I recall, people usually look up and to the left when trying to recall something from memory. So where did he get the correct name from? I've watched the segment several times, and I am sure he has an earpiece in his right ear. It just looks so obvious from the expression on his face and the way he holds his head."

oh, it was fully functional!

no really, they probably didnt have one because it wasn't an event where they couldn't approach the prez and whisper in his ear as they did

That seems very telling. :(

I don't blame him for using an earpiece but when the president is suppose to know information in and out and basically live it day to day. Especially after Semptember 11th and with terrorism. It is very disconcerting when there is a possibility that he is being fed information to look like he is competent.
