Robbery Suspect Crashes

The suspect, who hasn't yet been identified, entered The Old Ice House, a convenience store near the corner of West International Speedway Boulevard and Ridgewood Avenue about 12:45 p.m. Friday and produced a handgun, which officers believe may have been fake, Daytona Beach police Chief Mike Chitwood said.

“He doesn't get anything,” Chitwood said.

The suspect didn't get anything because the owner of the store produced his own gun and fired off a few shots, Sgt. Mike Griffin said.

The suspect then fled the scene in his sister's gray four-door Honda and drove south down Keech Street at a high rate of speed, Chitwood said. As the suspect approached South Street, he failed to navigate the turn, hopped a curb and drove straight through a chainlink fence and into a tree shortly before 1 p.m.

Griffin said the vehicle rolled over onto the driver's side and the front end caught fire. He said emergency crews arrived at the scene and righted the car so they could pull out the suspect.

Chitwood said he believes the suspect, who was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center, is in critical condition.

The unidentified store owner didn't want to comment Friday afternoon.

I'm just going to go with "Never rob a store."

Yea that's works too, what's LOL is it's in a high-crime area so anyone attempting to rob a store should expect to encounter armed resistance, a paint gun or some other fake crap is as stupid as it gets..

Hopefully this thug learns from this and never does it again. Good for the store owner standing up to him.

In FL no less. It's not like it's a liberal wonderland like NY or CA.

a high rate of speed

I can get rid of 2 words out of 5 and it still means the same thing. Maybe the interweb wouldn't be so full up if people weren't padding out boring articles... oh wait, yeah I forgot about the pr0n

he´s still a thug if he tries to rob a store
this resulted in gunfire in public by the store owner
somebody could have been hurt, which would have been mostly the robber´s fault
he himself was hurt when fleeing, could have killed somebody else in the crash

as funny as it may sound, this is a serious crime, even without a real gun

using the sister´s car for a getaway on top of this list of shame, probably licence plate on it and all,
that guy must have been some whacky stupid head...

I'll go with that and never pull a gun on somebody unless you intend to use it (obviously a fake one wouldn't do you much good lol).

Not a bad idea to make sure they don't have a gun, too. Like the guy who robbed the liquor store, and ended up with the clerk's gun practically in his mouth!

If it's proven not to be a real gun, can he avoid an armed robbery charge? If so, that would be a reason not to use a real gun.

I suppose it would have been better if the store owner had gone to a range and practiced shooting. Same outcome - in the hospital in critical condition - but without the risk of those stray bullets, without someone's chain link fence being destroyed, without the sister's car being destroyed, without fire companies having to waste their time, etc.

Probably not. A guy I knew, down on his luck, decided to start robbing banks up in New England. Hit about 7 or 8 in Rhode Island, before he got nabbed. He would walk in, tell the teller that he had a gun and demand the money. When he was caught, he didn't have a gun, but he was still charged with armed bank robbery, because he had made the threat.

I'd guess that using a plastic (toy) gun would be the same thing.
