Lesser Known Facts

I was talking to my friend today and he mentioned that while "fish" is used to describe multiple fish of the same species, "fishes" is used to describe multiple fish of which there are at least two species.

So if you had 3 goldfish, you have 3 fish. If you had 2 goldfish and a salmon, you have 3 fishes.

What sort of facts do you guys know that most people aren't aware of? Please limit responses to facts, nothing too opinionated, and nothing personal to your or your situation.

"I am sitting in the dark without any clothes" may not be known by many people, but who its not that interesting.

If you are average, the length between your wrist bone and your elbow is the same length as your foot!

And while we're on elbows, it is impossable to LICK your elbow!

(unless you are Gene Simmons)

Against that movement really, and not the Catholic church, the Aglican church. The Catholic church got booted long before antidisestblishmentarianism came into being.

Try : Floccinaucinihilipilification - "the act or habit of esteeming or describing something as worthless, or making something to be worthless by said means"

Velcro was invented by a guy who was pulling burs out of his socks and noticed how the burs interacted with the fibers.

Unfortunately the machines to actually MAKE it weren't available until YEARS later.

Well he got the England part right anyway, sort of, since it was wrt to Ireland and Scotland that the movement mostly pertained.

There is no such thing as an "espresso bean", nor an "espresso roast", although commonly mistaken as some kind of very dark burnt and oily bean. Espresso can be made using any variety of beans, typically Arabica (sometimes a little robusta), roasted to varying degrees from light to dark.

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicvolcanoconiosis is longer, and in several dictionaries.

Since we're on long words, my favorite:
Hippopotomonstrosesquipedalian - adjective, pertaining to a very long word.

Indeed!

Studies have found a correlation between testosterone and spatial intelligence. This may explain why women are such awful drivers.

Compared to their heterosexual counterparts, gay men tend to excel at English and be inferior at math (this may tie in to the testosterone factoid above; mathematic and spatial abilities are linked) (this definitely explains my HS English teachers).

City College of New York is the only team in college basketball history to win both the NIT and the NCAA Tournament in the same season (1950). Bradley University lost to CCNY in the finals of both tournaments.
