lesser known battle of WWII

thanks for the replies but i should have made it more specific.

i need little known land battles fought by US soldiers. there's still a few you guys listed that i need to check out yet, but if you can think of anything more specific to what i'm asking for there, i would appreciate it.

i want to use this for a short story that i'm planning on writing. its going to be mostly sci-fi-ish but it starts out during WWII and i want something factual that i can base it off of but something that not everyone knows about - if that makes sense.

The Winter War is still relatively unknown event to the masses (outside of Finland).

Amazing how well the Finns held off the Soviets with far less men and resources.

yeah, i just watched a movie that came out not that long ago called The Great Raid that was exactly about the stuff mentioned in that article.

i'd have to say that if there's a hollywood movie about it, it can't be that unknown.

How about the Aleutian fighting? Most folks don't the Japanese invaded the Western Alaskan islands.

Learned from the history channel.

Same for me. A lot of the time, the History Channel has some pretty interesting things about military actions from WWII to the present day.

Market Garden isn't super well known.

Yeah, only through BF1942.

Ummm - are we forgetting A Bridge Too Far? 😉

I never said it wasn't in anything (though I didn't know about BF1942). It's just if you ask most anyone what Market Garden was they aren't going to have a damn clue.

It was also in one of those Close Combat games (I think it was called A Bridge Too Far actually 😛)

Yep

Yep

I LOVE Close Combat II. One of my favorite games ever. Back in the day I played it for hours and hours. That's what got me interested in Market Garden in the first place.

Sure, if you want to talk code words most people are probably going to be clueless unless you put it in context. How many are left that recognize Overlord, Watchtower or Torch as the major engagements that they were?
