Less power requirement with modern CPU design for lower power consumption

I'm wondering that even with multicore CPU, would the 45nm and smaller CPU actually require less power than their 90nm or 130nm cousins? So unless we're running SLI, would there really be a need for 500W+ PSU?

Depends on how far these chips can overclock and the current draw from the latest GPU.

Haha, true for us overclockers. Unfortunately, the Penryn's TDP doesn't seem to be going down at all.
