I've always wondered if we lost body hair as evolution took its path, does it mean people with less body hair are more "modern?" I sometimes see people that have so much body hair in the gym locker room that look like gorillas from the back. But on the other end of the spectrum, I see people with almost zero body hair...

Although less hair is more acceptable to the social norms I don't think it means that they are more modern.

So when people get old and loose their hair due to hereditary baldness, they become more "modern" with age?

Are you Asian and trying to proclaim your race more evolved, because they generally have less hair?

lol. I believe I have all of 3 small chest hairs. 24 yr old caucasian male, no shaving. People have different bodies from different genes.

Well, since hair is used by mammals to stay warm, and we have found better means to stay warm, it would make sense that we could evolve to having less and less hair.

So you're saying people with less hair are more evolved?

that's pretty much it. since we are the only animal that also wears clothes, we don't need hair to stay warm and since people are slowly evolving to have less hair, your statement is probably accurate.

I am a hairy beast and am definitely less modern. You should have seen the hassles I had to deal with to get DSL here in my cave.

I think that's a foolish notion

and you didn't answer my question

I'm 34... not asian...

I have to shave once a week. 4 chest hairs. So little arm pit hair that I have been asked if have waxed it recently.

I'm the pinnacle of evolution!

Actually, I was told in one of my anthropology classes that we have as much hair on our bodies as adult chimps. So it isn't that we have less hair, we just have finer hair, not coarse hair.

No. As with any phenotype, there is a range of degree. We evolved through natural selection to have less body hair, but this probably started happening several hundred thousand years ago before our species migrated out of warmer climates. Granted I'm not an anthropologist. Just because someone you know has a shag rug for chest/back hair doesn't mean he's more genetically similar to primates than someone with no chest/back hair.

Can't really evolve since there's barely any natural selection anymore. Say thanks to health care, 'banks' and other weird reasons for that. If anything, we're going backwards: all the smartest/best don't have as many kids anymore...

I don't know who's dumber, the person that spouted that nonsense or you for believing it.
