Diverticulitis forces Brock Lesnar out

Former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar on Thursday pulled out of his bout with Junior dos Santos because of diverticulitis, a digestive disorder.

Lesnar (5-2-0) was scheduled to face dos Santos on June 11 at UFC 131 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Dos Santos will now face Shane Carwin in the heavyweight title eliminator.

Lesnar was forced to pull out of a fight with Carwin in October 2009, shortly after learning that he had both mononucleosis and diverticulitis. He underwent surgery and defeated Carwin by submission (arm triangle choke) in the second round at UFC 116 in July 2010.

Despite this current bout with diverticulitis, Lesnar has no intention at this time of calling it a career.

"I'll tell you one thing, I'm not retiring," Lesnar told ESPN.com on a UFC conference call. "This isn't the end of my fight career.

"I have a strong faith that there is a solution to every problem. We just have to find the right solution to fix this problem," he said.

Lesnar and dos Santos were opposing coaches on "The Ultimate Fighter Season 13." The winner of the fight was slated to face current UFC heavyweight titleholder Cain Velasquez.

Dos Santos will take a record of 12-1-0 into his fight against Carwin, who is also 12-1-0.

Looking forward to seeing Carwin fight again.

I knew Lesnar would find a way out of this match.

Brock he scared, Cain took his fighting spirit, put it over a tortilla, poured hot sauce on it, rolled it up and ate it taco style.

Pretty damn impressive to have surgery and beat someone in the same round.

Probably WWE's fault

But then again some of those guys seem to be physically doing great in old age

he can act with the best of them

you are a idiot.

he has had issues with this before. Sad to see it flaring up again but it might be best for him to hang up the gloves.

last time he got sick he was really sick. this is something that can kill him.

There is no way this one goes to decision. Someone is going to be pulling some Zzzzzs.

I think if Brock and Carwin fought 4 more times, Carwin would win all 4. So Brock better hope his road back tot he title, does not have to go through Carwin. I think the only questions JDS has to answer against Brock, is if he can stuff the TD or get back up after one.

Yes. Clearly this is it. His entire career is threatened by his acting now and previously and he is losing millions of dollars. Surely it can't be an actual illness at work. Given his personality and everything, the most likely answer is that he is faking it because he's scared.

If you only watch their 1st fight once, one might think that. But Brock wasn't in much trouble at all, and even ended up getting up and going for a take down before the 1st round was over. I've watched the fight 4 or 5 times, and I don't see Brock losing to Carwin unless it's via a haymaker. They fight a 2nd time, Carwin will punch himself out again and Brock will win via having a better gas tank.

As long as Lesnar keeps consuming the food he does, his condition will not change.
His diet and any possible steroid will continue to be his burden.
And i would not be surprised at all that if he waits long enough he will have cancer of the colon.
But he needs his diet to do the sport he does...
Choices...

What food would that be? Is he not adhering to a prescribed diet? Not saying that's not true but it's not something I've read anywhere yet...

BTW, both Edgar and Maynard are out of UFC 130, the main event now is Rampage and Hamil. Hope they allow refunds on the PPV for people.

easy win for Dos Santos

don't get caught by Carwin in first round. Carwin will soon gas in the second round.

Conspiracy theory time:

UFC knew this months ago - they ran the Ultimate fighter for 8 weeks to get strong ratings and sold tickets to 131 knowing Brock would not be able to fight.

Very convenient to have Carwin on the same card fighting a nobody.............

I'm usually not one for conspiracy theories, but not only is this one possible, it's likely. Even by post-surgery standards Brock looks thin. At least thin for him. Something in my gut has been telling me as I've watched this season of TUF that he doesn't look right. And now we know.

I think JDS-Carwin is an incredible fight, but they need something else on that card now. Wonder what they'll brew up...

A) He has changed his diet. He stated that he has been strictly adhering to his prescribed diet for his condition and that's why this was surprising.

B) Regardless, the link between diet and diverticulitis is dubious . The "traditional" thinking was that a meat-heavy diet with minimal protein could be to blame, but I believe this is no longer consensus and may even have been debunked

C) Steroids would certainly be bad in his condition and given that he's a pro athlete. I hope he's not (still?) taking them.
