Lens hoods and caps for Canon lenses.

I have a thread open already but wanted a specific thread for this.

I have the Canon EOA Rebel XS w/ 18-55mm and 55-250mm lenses and I think I am going to get the EF 50mm f/1.8 II.

I would like to get center pinch covers for the 18-55 and 55-250 lenses. Mine tend to fall off easily when in the camera bag which bothers me. Assuming the same thing for the 50mm. So, I want ot get 3 cetner pinches from B&H. can anyone recommend some of those?

Also, I'd like to get a lens hood or two but have no clue on how sizing works. That is, what size hoods fit on my lenses. I don't need anything fancy. Anything is a step up from nothing. I would prefer to limit things to one hood if possible

I really want to spend as little as possible on these items. Links to B&H would be much appreciated.

If you look up the individual lenses on B&H under accessories on the page it should have the correct lens hood listed there, usually an aftermarket one too.

Hood for 18-55 - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Lens_Hood.html

Hood for 55-250 - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Lens_Hood.html

Both of those are the cheaper aftermarket ones, to save you some money. As far as the center pinches go, some one else I am sure will have a suggestion. I just use the included ones with my lenses.

If you are going aftermarket, might as well shop one of the Chinese sellers on Ebay. They are slow shippers but you usually save a lot with a bit of patience. I always go Canon original but you wont find any pinch caps that are true Canon that I know of.

How is the quality of the chinese hoods? I need a hood for my 135L, but I like the durability of the original Canon parts.

Ive only had one Chinese hood, made for the 50 1.4. It fit so tight that I was afraid of damaging the lens so I purchased a Canon hood for it. All my Canon hoods have been great. I buy used ones for a LOT less than new though. Who cares if it has a few light scuffs.

i once bought a hood on ebay for a 100mm macro. the plastic feels like my other canon hoods, fits fine. the only thing is most knock off hoods don't have the fuzzy lining inside like canon ones. the lining is probably to reduce flare and you might be able to achieve the same result by lightly and evenly sanding the inside of the knockoffs.

Even Canon removed the flocking inside the hood for awhile. That is why you see version II and III of some hoods. Version one had the flocking, version II had painted surface, and version III went back to the flocking.

The thread size is marked on your lens. For a canon 18-55mm IS f/3.5-5.6 the filter size is 58mm. This is the size you want to look for when you buy any lens cap.

Or you can go to this website and look at the filter size for each canon lens you want to buy a lens cap for. Center pinch versus size pinch lens caps use the same size.

Hoods are unique for each lens. You will have to seach for the model number of the compatible hood type from the manufacturer's website.
