Lenovo Y580 (Budget of 800 - 1000)

Hey all. Buying a new laptop for my junior year of college. Looking to spend around 800 - 1000 on it. Hoping to run most newer games on decent settings. My current top choice is a Lenovo Y580, for the price it seems to be a slam dunk. I was just wondering if anyone has experience with this brand/product, and could let me know their experience, or if there's some other, better option I'm overlooking.

My wife bought a Y570 and returned it because of a problem with the NIC not reattaching after sleeping. Nice machine overall, the screen is only a 768 screen if that matters to you, though you can output to a richer monitor if you want.

I'm still looking for a replacement for her and considering the Asus N56 models. They'll have more video HP and a backlit keyboard for similar money. I think the Lenovo has a second drive bay, which might help with future addition of an SSD to speed up the unit while keeping a spinning drive for working files/backup. I might end up buying the N56 for her later this year and dropping in a 256G SSD when the pricing gets down to $100...(Xmass?)

Two weeks ago I purchased the Y580 with these specs:

3rd generation Intel Core i7-3610Q processor
Genuine Windows 7 64 bit
15.6” display ,16:9 widescreen
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M 2GB graphics
8GB DDR3 memory,
750GB +64GB SSD HDD storage
Integrated Bluetooth
high-speed 802.11n Wi-Fi
USB2.0
USB3.0 connectors
Backlit Keyboard
6in1 card reader
Integrated DVD Drive
Integrated 1.0M (720p HD) webcam
Dolby Home Theatre V4 audio enhancement & JBL designed speakers
HD graphics support
HDMI output
Wi-Di
Battery Life : 4 hours
Warranty : 1 Year Limited

Boots up in less than 30 seconds. The construction appears to be solid. I like the feel of the keys. No offensive bloatware pre-installed. Plenty of bells and whistles. Skyrim and MW3 run beautifully with high+ settings.
I Have not experienced the NIC problem described by marcplante.
My only complaint is that the wireless adapter has been hobbled by Lenovo to prevent connection to 5Ghz (2.4Ghz only).

Commenting a little more beyond my wife's sample defect. The build was solid with a nice feel. Also the sound is very good for a notebook. Can't speak to the specs vs a dell 17R, though I'm guessing that's a 17" unit.

I'm really thinking about this laptop. It seems to be the best purchase for me. 15", HD, good battery, relatively thin/light.

Hm..

There's a sale right now. $933 before taxes. Came out to 1060 or so for me. This is the 1080p version.

Lenovo.com has HUGE deals on a regular basis. You should be able to get the loaded box listed above for that 933 price. If it isn't available, wait a couple weeks. You can also look up Lenovo's Student store. No real affiliation with a school required. I didn't know they were putting in 1080 screens.

Hmmm lenovo pricing is higher, but fluctuates wildly. I think that Wed is their price change day. Call and talk to a rep to confirm.

It's through their Barnes and Noble affiliate link. Just google it, create an account, log in and you should see that pricing for the Y580.

Ive seen one in person and have to say .. They look pretty nice in brushed aluminum. I a fan of the curved island chiclet keyboards that lenovo has come out with. Backlit keyboard is a nice feature.. All in all though, i would say it feature rich laptop for price.
