I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Z580. It need some repair so they told me I could look up a provider from their website and take it to be repaired rather than paying and waiting to ship the thing there and back and be out of it for 2-3 weeks.

I used their website and found a local place, but when I went there, I was told they only support the Think line of laptops and not the Idea line.
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-service/service-provider/default.page?

Has anyone dealt with this before? The 800 number people seem pretty clueless and aren't really able to help at all. I don't know why they have places that fix some laptop sof a brand but not others but the website doesn't specify that there's a difference at all.

Thanks.

huh, if their website is not helping and their CSRs are clueless. I guess the alternative is to ship it in for 2-3 weeks.

I had to recently get repair quotes for a Thinkpad for warranty purposes and their website pointed to a number of shops around the area so I got it from there. When I called up a number of them they wouldn't answer their phones so it was kinda frustrating to drive around asking for a repair estimate.

Out of curiousity, what type of repair does it need?

The manuals are freely available on Lenovo's site, and anything short of a mobo can probably be done without to much hassle..

It pretty much needs a mobo and cpu swap. And sine it's under warranty, they won't let me do it myself even though I could.

Guess I chalk this up as a lesson learned to never buy an IdeaPad and ship it in. :(

The IdeaPad line is typically handled by Lenovo's Depot Repair service. Local authorized repair shops tend to only have Thinkpad authorization. You should send it in for depot repair. Typically they will send you the box to ship it in, and pay for the postage. It also is usually only about a week for repair.

Just make sure that your problem could not be user damage like spill in the keyboard, etc. or you will be charged for the repair and have to pay it to get the system back.

They quoted you 2-3 weeks for a repair directly from Lenovo? Every time I do a repair with them they overnight me a box with a next day lablel, so 2 days total to get it there. They also overnight it back. I think the longest I've waited is 6 business days total. Usually it's back to me within 5 days of me calling it in.

This was also my experience with Lenovo. Using the IBM repair facility in Atlanta GA. from shipping out to receiving back was 4 days. Of course the Thinkpad Line of Notebooks do get better service.
