Yikes. I want to handle one physically before I totally make up my mind on this one, but so far it looks like a POS. Going against almot everything that built IBM's rep. in the notebook segment.

I'm curious, why do you think it looks like a POS?

I wouldn't go to the point of calling it a POS but here are my points as follows :

Pros :

-Widescreen (Obviously)
-Speakers are where they should be on the top not the bottom, ( maybe now they were able to do this since it's a wide screen and they have space on the sides now.

Cons :
-I somehow like the titanium cover , but I can live without my Thinkpad reflecting the light in the room and it would have been a good thing if they were to make it in a way that it can be attached and dettached, but at least it's optional.
-The look of the laptop from the front view really made me feel bad about it, it's too not like a Thinkpad It's so Powerbook like, what happened to the nice well cut sharp edges there that made a Thinkpad standout from the rest ?
-What's the deal with these silver buttons, a little bling bling :disgust: ?
-Look at those pics where they are stacked on top of each other, they have got rid of the purple Eject buttons, while your at it look at the edges in there it looks awful no where near the beauty of a T series.
-UltraNav redesigned Why? everyone loves the way the UltraNav buttons looks like, why mess around with the buttons now ?
- The Win Key :disgust: why not put it at the farthest left that way it won't get in the way for those who are used to Thinkpad's keyboards ?
better yet why not make it optional ? Provide two sets of keyboards upon order , and charge more for a win key .

I don't know who is Lenovo appealing to with the Z series lineup, if someone is going to say the media audience, BAH it's too expensive for non-BigBlueDiehards to buy anyway, those media audience have Dell and gateways they don't need Thinkpads, and not at prices like $ 1599 for a simple Pentium M setup. for that price people who like games and media can get some crappy dell 9300, after all they don't know the difference.

I am ashamed of myself that I have defended the Z-series in this forum I am % 100 wrong about that. If I needed a black PowerBook I would get me a PowerBook and a black spray can thank you.

I've now had both these widescreens in my hands on multiple occasions since they've been announced.

You have got to remember something.... ThinkPads were headed this way before the Lenovo deal of May 1st.... .So be careful when you suggest they are not "IBM".

Also, the new ThinkPads following will most certainly look the same/have the same styling cues.

The market these TP's are targeting however are not your typical ThnkPad customer, and that's not a bad thing. The health of ThinkPad depends on the new Lenovo expanding it's product offereings and moving into new customer segments.

I've been told these are on the shelves at select Office Depot stores.... best to hold your final opinions until you get your grubby hands on them!!! :)

In my opinion - they are a true ThinkPad, have the same build quality, wealth of design features.... and I will still take their US based support over India any day of the week.

Ofcourse I do know that the Z series was part of the IBM - Lenovo deal, but my rant wasn't directed at Lenovo as much as it was towards IBM, if the drastic changes are only limited to the Z series in the future I garuantee you, you won't be annoyed by my rants again, but I was expressing my concerns concerning the possiblity of such changes happenning to the T R G & X lineups, in that case everyone will be furious and the Thinkpad brand will become like those Dells more or less.

If what you are saying about the office depot is true I will be heading to one by tommorwo to see if I can find any on display and perhaps hopefully my judgement from the pictures is corrected, but the pictures aren't that far of reality, I have to say that I wasn't annoyed by the Z60t as much as I was with the Z60m for some reason.

I really don't think this thing is going to sell well. The T, X, and R series will sell many, many more units. There doesn't seem to be nearly the value in the Z as in the T or R. I think its a big mistake.

I'm gonna hold off on my opinion yay-or-nay till I actually get to drive one. But I will say that my first thought was, "man I hope they don't replace the T-series w/ this".

If Lenovo does that, then they have lost all respect they ever had from me. The T-series is the best notebook in its class (Mainstream, versatile, notebook).

The T-series won't be replaced by something like the Z-series. You may see some of the features (Winkey, newer design, etc), but that would be the extent of it I would say. I don't have any kind of confirmation on those changes, so the T-series may just get updated tech and nothing else; time will tell.

I said before I want to retain complete judgement until I can handle one physically, but:

- I like the solid black down to business casings with striaght lines and corners. None of that Dellish rounded BS.
- I don't like the fact they had to jack with a near perfect (IMO) keyboard to make this notebook. Hopefully it isn't too bad, I simply don't know yet.
- I'll not comment on the titanium cover yet as pictures don't do that kind of thing a justice.
- It looks like they are trying to hard to reinvent the wheel. THinkpads practically sell them selves, and I don't think that formula should be altered to much.
- In fairness I don't like the biger bulkier thinkpads (Partial to the T/X series)

I would love to see them simply stretch say my T40p and stick a 15.4" high res wide screen in it with no other liberties taken. Just seems like they may have added a tad too much bling in this revision ;)

I see no bling. I can't figure out what it has that the T-Series doesn't have. I think its over priced, and i would never by it. POS is a little strong but its not the greatest lappy ever.

Well said, I wish they would just stretch my R50e a little too and slap in an AMD Turion and an ATI X700 while they are at it

It looks like a good laptop and it sure beats the XPS 14 inch WXGA interms of quality <----- everyone will agree.
It is very expensive thou. You can get 2 XPS 14s for that price. Also, I don't like how the 8cell battery sticks out.
