Unfortunately the LenovoT420 I purchased last year has one of the LCDs that has the "screendoor" effect that haunted some buyers. I kinda just dealt with it for while, but I read that some people have replaced their screens themselves with great success. I found some replacement LCDs for ~$50 on amazon.

I love the laptop. Hate the terribad display. I actually went so far as thinking about getting a new one just to get away from the display, which would be a waste of money. In hindsight I should have got it replaced right when I got it but I had to leave on a trip and time got away from me.

Anyone here have any experience with this sort of DIY project? More specifically, has anyone successful swapped out their T420 screen for one of the available LED replacement screens?

I'm bumping my own post to offer some information to any that are interested. I ended up purchasing an LG replacement panel through Amazon.

LG PHILIPS LP140WD2(TL)(B1) LAPTOP LCD SCREEN 14.0" WXGA++ LED DIODE

It ended up being a very easy swap out. It took some time to breakdown the laptop to get to the LCD, but Lenovo had online manuals that show how to do it in detail.

The difference was night and day. The new screen was glossy instead of matte (I prefer matte), but in general it was far better than the screen at had in terms of quality. Also, the contrast ratios are much better. With the older screen I had to lower the brightness quite a bit to prevent the wash out, but this screen looks great at default levels. Altogether the swap cost about ~$65 but it was worth every cent.

I hope this information is useful to all who have T420s and are unhappy with the quality of the LCD. Good luck.
