so amazingly i have owned all 3 of these.

i got rid of the wind and the s10e... so you know which one i think is best that said heres my comments for people interested in netbooks.

now it completely depends on what is important to you on a notebook which one you will think is best. for me build quality and keyboard layout are most important. all the machines are atom anyway so thats not much of a differentiating factor and all 3 had effectively the same screen too...

msi wind

pros:
biggest community i'd say
uses 2.5" sata drive
comes with an OS cd
3 usb ports

cons:
pretty crappy build quality compared to the other 2. i.e. the battery area was even too tight for the battery (made it hard to take the battery out). that and the plastic is very thin, keyboard flexes etc, palm rest feels cheap.
touchpad is horrible, and not only that it only has a single somewhat stiff button
keyboard has super small period and comma keys and the shift key is more to the left than it should be.
hard to upgrade ram / hdd

lenovo s10e
pros:
good build quality
2.5" sata hard drive
much easier to upgrade hard drive and ram than msi wind
easy to upgrade bluetooth module as well
synaptic multi touch touchpad is very nice
express card 34 slot

cons:
keyboard is also weird... super small right shift key, and the 1 key is too far left for touch typists (this is really annoying, especially the shift when you want to press !@#$)
only 2 usb ports.
bottom gets hot (uncomfortably hot if you are sitting on a couch sometimes)
there is no OS restore cd (this is really horrible, i mean c'mon lenovo its like 5 cents)

hp mini 1000
pros:
available ssd (which is what i got)
the best looking by far, i'd say the only thing more stylish is that $900 sony one
keyboard is about as good as it gets (the samsung nc10, 10" acer, and the new dell mini 10 have the same layout so i think netbook manufacturers have figured out this is the right way layout)
very good build quality
very easy to upgrade ram, fairly easy to get to hard drive

cons:
a little more expensive
upgrading to a hard drive needs a 1.8" pata zif which is not fast or cheap
only 2 usb ports (well it sort of has 3 if you want to use the weird recessed one)
touchpad buttons are to the side like the acer one 9" (its not that bad though)
because the battery is in the center not the edge, there are much less after market battery options right now
no vga port (and hp hasnt released the dongle yet at who knows what cost)

anyhow, basically i'd say out of these 3, if you value being able to say chat on aim and type out long anandtech posts the hp mini is probably the best. probably not the best for adding stuff to, or modding with new hard drives and such. the lenovo or msi are probably good if you want to mod, and i'd say the msi is probbly slightly better since theres a bigger community for it. the lenovo is built better though, so it feels more expensive and may last longer. it also has its own issues though.

I actually hated my HP Mini 1010NR.

The lack of a VGA port, the weird mouse buttons placement, the unbelievably cramped touchpad, the zif connector, and the cheap bezel around the screen really killed it for me.

The ungodly slow speed of the tiny SSD drive didn't give it high marks in my book either.

The keyboard was very nice though.

I got an Asus Eee PC 1000ha to replace it. MUCH better quality. The keyboard is on par with it, aside from the odd right shift key placement.
Plus it has twice as large of a battery. I have no use for a netbook that gets less than 3 hours of battery life.

Yes, it uses the same form-factor as the 10" ones, but puts this tiny screen and ugly bezel in the 10" screen's place.

Does the right shift key bother you? Thats the main thing bugging me from the lenovo. The hp battery and hard drive breaks me on that. Basically I want the asus 1000he with the samsung nc10 keyboard.

oddly i didnt buy all 3 , it just sort of worked out like that.

originally i wanted the S10, but they were originally out of stock forever (like when they first came out it took like 2 months to deliver).

so i bought the wind, and it was ok (used live cash). sold it when the s10e came out, to actaully get the one i really wanted originally but the right shift and the 1 key drove me crazy.

so bought the mini 1000 on fs/ft here when i saw one for a really great price.

i effectively sold the wind and s10e at breakeven (mostly because the live cash made the wind so cheap). so it wasnt too bad.

that said, the right shift key did drive me insane on the s10e. the comma and period did too. i guess i dont mind the battery and hard drive so much since i mainly use my netbook to watch tv while chatting and browsing the web, so its not too big a deal (i can plug it in while doing that... and i dont really sit there for more than 2 hours). the keyboards though were a big deal (that and the lenovo gets hot).

if you want an HP with a real hard drive and bigger battery, the 2140 should be pretty good (expensive though). or the new dell mini 10 whenever it comes out. they all seem to have basically the same keyboard now.

I've owned MSI Wind, HP Mini and Samsung NC10. I have to say Samsung NC10 wins hands down. Performance-wise they're pretty much all the same, but it just comes down to personal preference.

In terms of keyboard NC10 and Mini dominates, but overall, I feel Samsung NC10 is more solid, and easier upgrade (at least for RAM). As for hard drive, it takes standard 2.5".

yeah i would have gotten the nc10, but the mini i got was about $120 less, so the wallet spoke.

the nc20 looks really intriguing with the much faster cpu.

NC20 has 1.3GHz VIA Nano U225, but for a netbook, 10" is the limit for me, 12" is bordering on big (and I already have a full dual-core 12" tablet pc :))

i got a 2140 but feel the metal chassis makes it heavier than necessary (compared to mini 1000 hp) . has some nice upgrade features but i have to say any more weight than the hp 1000 or dell mini-9 is just too much..

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure I couldn't deal with the side-mounted touchpad buttons. I'm thinking I might pick up an NC10.

Yeah, once you hit the 12" mark a laptop starts being a pain to lug around no matter what the weight, at least to me.

My Samsung NC10 should arrive today. :)

I am thinking about going for a mini 1000(10"). I really want to hold out for something with the GN40 or Ion but I am getting impatient so I am keeping my eyes on the classifieds and ebay in the meantime for a deal. The battery life isn't a big deal to me but the keyboard and general form factor is.

I'm glad you like your Asus 1000HA.
Mine is still en route from ZZF as I'm writing this quote.
I got in and paid $299.99 on a very short discount by ZZZ the other night.
A road warrior like myself with 6 cell batt is a must.
I will post a mini review on it sometime in the near future.
