Lenovo G560 won't turn on

My laptop made a loud noise last night and the screen went blank so I held down the power button to shut it off. Now it won't turn on at all. With the battery plugged in the light is on showing that it's getting power but pressing the power button does nothing. Any help is appreciated.

Quick update. Now the fan spins and the power button lights up for about 5 seconds and then shuts off, turns itself back on and shuts off again. wtf?

You don't have to put the other drive in there, just take out the existing one and try to boot it.

Do the lights and fan stay on?
Occasionally, some laptops will experience an issue where they shut down almost immediately after the boot process begins. It has something to do with the capacitors in the power circuitry not discharging completely. The fix is to remove the battery and hold down the power button to discharge the capacitors. After that, replace the battery and use as normal.
But if your lights and fan stay on, then this is not the issue.

The lights stay on (battery, power) and the fan spins for about 2 seconds and then stops, then again and again like it's continuously trying to boot but failing. I hope that helps.

Bump. Just wondering if anyone else has a suggestion. The laptop has been sitting in the closet and I just pulled it back out to see if there's anything else I can do. Right now pressing the power button doesn't do anything at all. When the battery is connected and it's plugged in the battery light lights up indicating that it's getting power but the power button doesn't do anything.

Have you tried pluging in w/o the battery installed?

Strip it down then power it on.
Remove, battery, dvd drive, hard drive, and reseat the memory.

+1 on this - should take you all of 10 minutes to do it.

By removing these parts, you are eliminating a large majority of the things that might be causing the problem other than the motherboard and power source. If it boots up after being stripped, begin adding one component back at a time and restart until you find what is keeping the system from booting.

Thanks for the responses. I couldn't get the DVD drive out but with everything else out it still won't boot. That probably means I'm SOL... this laptop is less than 2 years old and just out of warranty. Such a bummer.

No, that don't mean nothing until you get the dvd out and have 1 dimm install.

I have a G570, It's probably the same procedure for removing the optical drive, there is one screw on the bottom of the case about midway down and slightly to the right of center, directly inline with the center of the drive itself. remove that screw and pull the drive out, you should be good to go.

Thank you so much. I got the drive out and put 1 stick of RAM in, plugged it in, and still nothing...

When you bought the laptop, you didn't buy it on a credit card which had an extended warranty feature did you?

I registered it on Lenovo's site and it said my warranty expired last November. I bought it with a chase freedom card.

Hello, I just pulled my Lenovo G560 out of "Safe keeping" where it has been for the last month to apply Symantec and Microsoft updates, I pushed the power button the battery light came on blue then the IO light also came on, stayed on for 3-5 seconds there was a slight whir noise then shut off with no change in the monitor. I replaced the P6100 with an M350 last October and have it ran great the entire time before putting it away (With an added hour to the battery run life with that) and also changed to 6gigs or ram. I tried the obvious things listed above, pulled the ram, dvd drive, hard drive, even switched the newer processor for the older one. and tried with everything in and nothing in with the same joy, was getting annoyed so I disassembled it totally wondering if there was a simple switch on the monitor hinge that had corroded. I found nothing visibly wrong so I reassembled the unit and was happy that I had no left over pieces But this is 2 G560s that have the same issue, I wonder if this is going to be something that starts showing up.

Josh in Canada -- I found this post by jaypath to someone having a similar problem with this model on Tom's forums:

Chingmeister, Do the following:
-unplug the computer
-remove the battery
-Hit the power button no less than 30 times.
-Leave the battery out another two minutes or so
-put the battery back
-plug the computer in
-power on

Allegedly there is a capacitor within the computer that can retain a static charge, resulting in no power to the motherboard. This can happen to new or old computers. The above steps will discharge said capacitor.

The OP reported success with this. Hope it works for you, too.

hi, sorry for the lengthy delay on replying to the above advice, finally got it back from the computer store I bought it from in much the same condition I brought it to them in except the retaining screw for the DVD drive was missing as I found out as I was walking home with it >.< turns out the stores owner has forgotten when I asked repeatedly if it had a full 1 year warranty on it and he assured me it did, but for your advice I tried it and no joy, I spoke to Lenovo customer support and after being bumped around to multiple supervisors to explain the situation they emailed me a return address and an RMA number (they call it something else though) and I shipped it off today, I ended up purchasing a new G570 with an i5 from another store and am really happy with it so if it can be fixed or not I am atleast set for this next year of school, even spoke to Symantec about transfering the license from the old laptop to the new one and not only did they do it but took control and even installed it for me. there are days that the customer service gods decide to smile on you and last week I fell into one of those days. I will let you know what Lenovo ends up doing for me on this and hopefully it is something good, I do prefer having a backup for just these situations.

I just pulled my laptop out of storage and My warranty expired last year! Any way to salvage this thing or should I just trash it?
