(Lengthy) Interview with Gabe Newell and why Valve doesn't suck

I'll admit, I'm a big fan of Valve probably for the same reason I like Google. Mostly because you get that "they're not out to screw you" vibe from them.

Anyway, Gamasutra posted a nice 4 page interview with Gabe and Erik Johnson about the atmosphere working inside the company.

It's mostly about DOTA2 since it's the next big thing out of Valve, but it covers a bunch of topics. It's a very good read for those, like me, interested in the business of PC Games.

Gabe Newell: I think not sucking is way more of an important thing to pay attention to first. I think every gamer can point to shipping too early, or sucking, as being a way more dominant story in our industry than, "Oh, it was slightly cumbersome to give the company money." I mean look at Minecraft, right? Notch wasn't thinking through his incredibly precise monetization strategy.

Don't inline entire articles like that. That's a copyright issue.

What good is a Valve interview that has no mention of Episode 3? :colbert:

It is hard to imagine getting such an interview and not asking about EP3. My guess is that it was a PR puff piece set up by Valve with strict conditions attached about what was to be asked.
