Length of Cat5/6 before speed degredation?

I'm adding a WHS to my network(again) and am going to run a hardwire it from my router to my PS3(streaming 1080P over wifi is a no go). It's going to take 50ft-100ft and just want to make sure it's not going to cut down the speed before I go to the trouble.

Ok, then is a 50'-100' cable going to leave me enough bandwidth to stream 1080P video? There has to be a working solution as that isn't exactly a great distance.

Im using a 50ft CAT 6 cable from monoprice to stream to my PS3 including 1080P, 720P FLAC, anything really and it works fine. Before, you know when you could actually install linux on the PS3 and i was able to do some playing around with it i was seeing 50MB/sec transfers, not bad for gigabit only a little on the slow side, rest of my network saw closer to 70MB/sec.

Standed cable is used for patch cable since it bends better but it doesnt conduct as well.
Solid core is used for long runs but isnt meant to bend as much

Should be no issue. 100 meters is about 328 feet. Your provided distances are well within the limits. One thing to watch out for is no metal staples. That can degrade things or pinch the inner wires. Use clips like for coax cable to hold it in place. Like these (all electronics stores and even Home Depot / Lowes / Radio Shack will have them)

i've got a 100 foot cat5e on a 100mb network, streams 1080p just fine to an asus o!play

the o!play does a quick bandwidth check before playing a video, it usually shows around 55mbps

Good, sounds like I'm in business. $25 at monoprice will upgrade all my connections to Cat6 and I'll be good to go. My router is a Linksys WRT610N that I hate but not enough to spend $100 to replace. My current cords are oddball stuff I have collected over the years and I have no clue what they are. The 360 I'll leave wireless as all that gets streamed to it is netflix which does fine over wifi. Any issues I should look out for? The server is going to a HP WHS.

It may work, distance is hopefully short enough that the stranded won't affect it. My reference books are all in the car my wife drove today so I can't look up the specifics on derating with stranded cable. The proper way would be to run solid core cable to jacks on either end, then patch cables at the end. Also, if the ends of a patch cable have problems, you are then stuck trying to put connectors on a stranded cable, which is a recipe for ruhroh.

If you do go with Cat-6, don't put the excess into a tight service loop, leave it as loose as you can and not very neat.

You might want to hold out and see what the new version of WHS will be like before buying one--or building your own so you can change it when you want, not waiting for HP to deliver an update (if ever). You could check into virtualizing it then...along with a firewall/gateway/router distro 😉
