Hello,
I am the new (proud?) owner is a semi-functional computer. My uncle made an attempt to buid his own and was only partilly successful. He found another, less obtrusive door-stop and, for my birthday, gave his project to me, in lieu of my usual Ben Franklin. The receipts confirm a large investment on his part. My question is, Would anyone out there be willing to help me make this machine into more than a conglomeration of parts? Some stuff actually works, some unfortunately do not. I realize that not everyone wants to participate in my dilemma, so I am including my email address in order to work on a one-by-one basis. I would really appreciate the help! My system is sooo very old and, in my situation, money is scarce. I'm not stupid, but I realize, in this realm, I am but a child. If interested please contact me at hammerdamage@minspring.com. Thanks for your time.

Jerry

I concur with the general sentiment but I sent you an email anyway should you require individual help.

I say you post all your issues in this thread and hopefully you'll have people come and help you out.

BTW: What does this have to do with Lemonade?

1.) Where does lemonade come in?
2.) Do we get lemonade if we help you? ;)
3.) Give some more info and I'll try my best to help.

Do you know the specifics of what you have on your current system?

The General Hardware forum would be a great place to start.

If it's cool, I'll list the pieces here:

Athlon XP '1600', Volcano 7 (?)
Soltek 75
256m of 2700 (?) - Never heard of this, but it is not 2100.
floppy unknown and system will not recognize.
Antec case, 350w power thing.
GF3 TI200
Audigy Xgamer
Pioneer 106s cd/dvd

I bought a Linksys 10/100 card to use with a Toshiba 2200 cable modem, which system will not recognize.

Problems:

The floppy is not recognized, so it is set up to read the cd, then the hd.

He kept his old hd. I bought a new one. WD 120 with the 8 cash. (Guy at the store said to trust him.)

Also kept his modem. I would like to use my cable as access to Web. Computer would not recognize Toshiba 2200, so I bought a card. But no dice. Card is not recognized.

I'm using Windows 98.

if the floppy isn't in backwards (the light is on all the time if it is) then it sounds like the board may be bad, which would explain the linksys card problem.

You are going to have to do a fresh install of the OS to use the new hard drive only.

The floppy could be a reversed cable at the drive/MB or I have seen ppl put the power plug on upside down as well

Do you have the skills to do an OS load from scratch on a new drive?

I would start by installing Windows XP or Windows 2K. Both boot from the CD, so you don't need to worry about the floppy. DOes they floppy work in Windows? or just not the boot? You can change the boot sequence in the BIOS (push delete when you turn it on). The ethernet card problem will probably be solved with a fresh install of XP or 2K, but if not then change the slot it is in. See if that helps. Good luck.

I like lemonade, I personally prefer either Minute made or Chrystal light, although country time is good if I just need to grabe something.
