LEGO Racers: video/emulation woes

I'll try to make this one short and to the point.

Installed LEGO Racers on my WinXP machine, but when I go to fire it up it says that no 3D device was found. The only way it starts is if I run it in WinNT compatibility mode (which is a bit odd as it was made for 9x), but even then it has some serious display errors, transparency showing up as black boxes mostly. This is what the official FAQ has to say about the problem:

Some graphics cards cannot even fake the transparency effect (see above) instead they put a black block on screen where the transparency should be. Contact the manufacturer of your PC's video card to obtain the latest drivers to see if this resolves the problem.

I guess a 6600GT is a bit above the game's scope, so I decided to use emulate a virtual computer with older hardware and see if it runs any better there.

So, I installed MS Virtual PC, but some of the virtual hardware didn't even install properly on it. Then I tried VMWare Workstation with Win98, and even though all the hardware is emulated properly, it seems to have problems with Direct3D. Anyway, when I go to fire up the game I get an error saying that it ran out of video memory, and I'm kind of baffled as to what to do about that.

If anyone has any ideas on how to get this thing working (either under XP or on a virtual machine), I'd be glad to hear them.

Bump.

I'm pretty open to anything, XP tweaks, other emulation software, doesn't matter as long as it's not overly complex (I could swap my vid card for a GeForce 2, but I'd rather not do that for the sake of a single game).
