Lego BARAD-DÛR = win

As a former (and, most likely, future) Legomaniac, I approve of this thread.

And Locut0s is right; a project like that would be terribly expensive.

I'm sure legos are cheaper in bulk. Also, there's always garage sales.

Yup, I traded a Sega Dreamcast for two tubs full of LEGO, from 80's to early 2000's. It would be worth a bundle if I sold it, but I regret selling mine when I was younger and my daughter loves them.

I looked at building a small 1 foot by 2 foot sign (one lego block thick). Ordering the bricks off of Lego.com would have cost me over $250. These were just normal 2x4 and 2x2 bricks.

Must be insane mark up considering it's just molded plastic.

It's precision molded plastic, there's alot of R&D, and advertising, and it's quality stuff. Very few toys can last 30+ years and still have playability. They have awesome customer service too!
If you've ever used the generic brands (MegaBloks, etc) the quality is horrible and not even worth the cheaper price paid for them.

I don't remember how much they cost, but I know you can go to Lego stores and pick up flat-rate boxes that can be filled with whatever types of blocks you'd like (that they have on hand). Sort of like buffet carry-out, but for Legos.

Think they're maybe $30-50/each...?

That is amazing. The other kids at the show must have been pissed when he rolled that thing in.

Bulk legos go down to as little as $.03-.04 each for smaller, simpler ones (like the round studs), and I'd say on average he's looking at $0.20-.25 each, with the arches and stuff being somewhat more expensive and there being a shitload of them. My guess would be somewhere in the 6-8 thousand pieces in that, depending on how solid it is.

If that's right, he's around $1500 in bulk pieces there.

Pick-a-brick, online. Order enough and you get a % discount.

Edit: Prices have gone up since I last ordered. I revised my estimates up 😛
Edit 2: Turns out my guess on the number of pieces was WAAAY off. The internets say 50k pieces. That puts his total somewhere closer to $10,000 in bulk bricks.

He might not have actually bought those pieces, you know. Lego actually employs people to design kits for them. A fired of my brother's does this; he probably has $50,000 of various Lego pieces and colors he got for free from the company to design with.
