My father in law ordered a gift for my wife and I from BeachCamera.com. I remember from a while back that they were one of those infamous scam stores from NJ that would make you call back to try and upsell etc etc. Sure enough, got a call today (they left a message) that I need to call them to talk about "delivery times".

I don't know if I can trust resellerratings and places like that because it's so easy for fake 'reviews' to be created. The BBB gives them a B- rating (which is pretty bad), with 50 complaints having been filed against them over the past 6 months. I don't know how many total transactions they have, but that seems like a lot since most people won't resort to BBB unless it's really sucky.

Anyone have experience with these folks, they smell like a scam to me......

it's not a scam if you get the product/services as requested.
bad business practices, yes, but I wouldn't say scam.

Legit company, albeit with shady business practices, usually centered around selling you extra products/services. I've heard of them cancelling sales and delaying shipment when the customer refuses to "play ball" and buy more from them...BUT, they're still a legit company.

Maybe "scam" is not the exact right word, but what you're describing is exactly the kind of crooked company I'm trying to avoid.

I'm debating telling FIL to cancel the order and buy it from a more legit place.....

Many of the NY/NJ camera stores operate in exactly the same way...and AFAIK, many are owned by the same people.

There are reputable camera stores out there, but most of the "discount" stores try to get you to buy accessories you don't really want.

I've done business with Abes of Maine, (tried to sell accessories and warranty, still delivered on time) B&H, (absolutely NO problems at all, 1st rate store) and Butterfly Photo. (they called and tried to sell extra goods, but still honored the price and shipped as promised.)
