Is anyone watching this? I DLed the eps through BT, and its not half bad. I thought it was going to be lame when I first saw the commercials, but its not too bad.

dling it right now. 0% on both, and it's been 30 min.

Ouch, they've been reseeded on a major BT site, but I am not certain if its permissable to speak it here.

I personally haven't read the books, but the little "article" referred to on /. was pretty eye-opening...I'm pretty into movies and just generally honoring someone's work...so I read the authors blog-thing after I watched the first half, and I'll just delete the second half. Pretty shady, completely ruining/changing a story like that, especially for Sci-Fi channel.

yeah, the story was TOTALLY different it seemed.

One of the best fantasy books ever written, and they butchered it.

I mean, if they're going to do that, why not just give it a different name?

I'm at 80% of episode #2 right now. The first one was OK, some of the acting was cheesy, especially the the young wizards father (blacksmith). It seems like they just tried to combine LOTR with harry potter, only without the budget.

I'll keep watching it since I like Kristin Kreuk and the overall genre.

I tried watching it but I had to stop an hour into the first episode. It was pretty horrible in my opinion. I'll probably attempt watching it again some other day when I'm in a more forgiving mood.

I have never read the books, but it sure seemed that there was a lot missing from the movie. There was essentially no character development for any of the secondary characters.

The books are SO much deeper.
In the book, Ged takes years to finally catch the Nameless one and all the while he is growing wiser and more mature. That is the whole first book, Ged getting to know himself.

The whole second book deals with the tombs of Atuan. At this point Ged is already the Archmage (i believe) and he is there searching for the lost ring of Archmage Erreth-Akbe or some such...and helps Tenar escape in the process.

Basically, this sci-fi series merged the 2 books together into an all new story which is just a shadow of the originals. Good thing they did not mangle the final book of the trilogy, The Farthest Shore.

I finally saw the first part last night, and while it started off pretty crappy (that blacksmith dad was a terrible actor) it's gotten a lot better. I didnt get the feeling Ged was at Rook for very long though, was he supposed to be there for a while? It was like "he gets there, learns some stuff quick, then gets kicked out."

All in all, pretty decent. My wife got scared of the nameless one when he hopped out of the water. Looking forward to part 2 tonight (tivo!)

I watched it and liked it, although some of it was pretty cheesy.

Unfortunately, I've gathered that they completely butchered the crap out of the books and made a "McMagic" fiasco out of it, according to Ursula K. LeGuin's website. I was planning on reading the books anyway, but I definitely want to read them now so I can get the "true experience" of the Earthsea story.

Just saw the second episode last night. It was all in all pretty good. My wife was all into it. Maybe I should pick her up a book for christmas?
