legality of selling used win2k/winxp ?

I have full boxed (retail) copies (1 each) of win2k and winxp pro that I don't need any longer due to getting a new computer.

neither was registered, but xp was "activated" maybe 2 or 3 times due to reinstall.

I have all the original stuff (license, etc) that came with them. what's the legality of selling them, and how much are they worth?

thanks

Give away the whole bundle - license, key, etc, and it's just fine. Of course, you can't use the key anymore, but that should be common sense.

As to how much they're worth - Whatever you can get for 'em. Check local pricing and adjust accordingly. 😀

Provided you don't keep the keys and use them after you sell the software packages, it's perfectly legal to sell them...

Most new licenses for W2K Pro go for about $100

Check what the cost of XP is a the local B&M store.

Also, you could just put them on E-Bay.

Technically all that is required for a legal sell is to give the buyer the Certificate of Authenticity with the license key on it. The fluff (including manuals and books) are not important, but always nice to include incase the buyer actually needs that stuff too.

As long as you don't retain any backups or copies you made of the software, you're ok.

why is asking how much it's worth not ok? should I call honda to ask how much my used honda is worth too?

is my xp key still usable to someone else, since I've already activated 3 times on my computer?

and of course this is all legit, I would include everything and have no "backup" copies...

Here you are expected to be able to research.

Also, it can lead to a bidding is you are trying to sell something.

Check the rules in the For Sale Forum regarding this matter.

To determine what you Honda is worth, you look at ads for what it is selling and/or shop around for comparisons.

Here, you can shop in the FS/FT forum or you are expected to checkout what other on-line sites are selling the item for.

Your item is common enough that you can easily find a reference price at a B&M.

It is not as if the S/W License has wear & tear on it.

Your buyer will have to go through the hassle of registering/activating the XP. Just make sure that they are aware that it was previously used.

It is legal, they will have to call MS and tell them that they bought it from someone though, since it might not want to activate automatically. But once they do that, all will be good.
