Say I posted an ad on craigslist saying I'll rip their dvds into a digital copy for a fee. Would the MPAA and FBI come knocking on my door?

Is it illegal? Yes
Can you get in trouble? Yes - if MPAA / RIAA bothers to scan craigslist, or someone snitches on you.
Is it worth it? Most likely not.

Circuit City Firedog used to offer this as a service. They would also rip CDs to MP3 and put them on DVDs for you.

As long as the DVDs are legally owned by the person, it shouldn't be an issue.

The difference is that CDs don't have copy protection, and DVDs do (usually). The DMCA made it illegal to circumvent the copy protection.

Just download someone else's rips, it's much faster than ripping them yourself. That's what I did when I realized it was going to take me about a year just to rip my TV show DVDs. :Q

You gonna get raped.

legal or not I doubt posting on Craigslist will lead to any problems, while it could I see a ton of shit on CL that is illegal. Hell I see 5+ people a week selling iPods that come with 3,000+ songs on it. I'm guessing for $100 I'm not going to get a Nano with $3,000 legit songs from iTunes 🙂

I also see a lot of people selling digital "DJ" setups that come with 20,000 songs. Would be a fabulous deal if the songs were legit.

What he said. If you actually did post this on CL you would probably be flagged and deleted before the authorities found out.
