Ok i work at a grocery store..yeah i know its a dumb place to work but i am young and just need a place to work for over the summer and I am done in 3 weeks.

But anyway.....Obvioulsy their are alot of people that work their..some young some old.

My questoin is...is it legal to pay each employee that works in the same place diffrent wages. Some people there have been working for 8 years and live off that salary and are getting piad for example...6.30...and some young kids like myself are getting hirde and getting paid for example 7.50. This does not seem fair to me...when the people go and ask the managers whats up with that they threaten them that they shouldnt be asking the other workers how much they are getting paid and that they can get fired if they continue to ask.

I know its not that big of a diff in pay but it would matter in the long run for people who live off of it.

These are just example wages but you get the point....I can see how it could be legal since you arnt suppose to tlak about wages but still...that just doesnt seem right when a 16 year old who is just getting trained is getting paid much more then a person who is experainced....

it might be difference in positions. i worked in a stop&shop, and baggers are paid minimum wage (NY) of $5.15 and cashiers are paid $6.50. both gets a raise of 15 cents an hour (!!!!!) after 6 months

as for night crew (the people who stacks the shelves at night), its $8/hr, and meat dept is $8/hr. bakery is $7/hour.

so it might be that way. but if it is really like you said about questioning the authority about the salary.... and get fired, it would be pretty illegal. it is pretty much illegal to fire someone without any gounds for firing the person...

WTF?

what makes you think it is against the law? last i checked we were not in the soviet union.

sheesh.

Yep, it's legal...and I do believe (but am not sure) that employers are in fact allowed to terminate you for continually asking other workers what their salaries are.

yeap. I bet you its in the handbook. It is usually against the rules. at least at every place i have worked.

they're not forcing you to work there, if someone doesn't like what they're getting paid they don't have to work there. they can pay people whatever they want to pay them.

I am not saying its illegal to get paid diff salaries, just wondering if it was illegal to not let other employees talk about it. I didnt know shessh..like i was saying i am not the one getting jipped i was just wondering.

It's legal. They may be rewarded for having worked there a long time. Good way to keep the employee turnover low. Anybody who's not management and has been working at a supermarket for years should reconsider their life.

Welcome to the working world!!!

If you keep on asking, that can be a violation of privacy and could be grounds for termination.

eh? maybe you want to read the Orginal post you did.

here in case you don't want to scroll up "My questoin is...is it legal to pay each employee that works in the same place diffrent wages"

now you are changing the story? sheesh.

Now why would it be illegal? either one that is. Asking people what they get paid is NONE of your business. YOU can and will be fired if you keep it up.

as someone else said welcome to the real world.

Guy in my department who easily has 20 years of experience on me and a college degree makes 6k a year less them me.

Is it fair?

Who cares, thats what he gets for not negotiating.
