Can I post game demo files on the net legaly?

I think that public demos are fine. The ones that companies relase to the net. But if you created a demo out of a game that was not meant to have a demo, then I would think that would not be good.

That sounds right to me, but remember that IANAL.

Exactly. Public demos are to create hype so more games are sold. Just check the EULA that you have to read to check on that specific demo. When in doubt, get permision.

Sometimes they allow you to download it for personal use, but distribution is not permitted. It should be in the contract you agreed to when you downloaded the file.

Correct. Often times demos that come with magazines are PAID demos. Either one way or the other. The most recent "problem" was when sites leaked a MOHAA demo that was CGW exclusive. Obviously CGW lost sales to those who would have bought the mag for the demo.

Most however, are fine. Just cover yer hiney.
