I have the opportunity to purchase just the Liscence for windows 2k, I will still be using the copied cd, but if I buy this peice of paper, will that end my life of crime? And should I buy it, can I just change my serial without re-installing?

Not sure about chaning the serial. It's been discussed around here though, do a search.

But, yeah it pretty much ends your life of crime by having a valid license. Provided you aren't trying to use an upgrade without the original or something.

With volume licensing the only media they give you is a single CD and you are supposed to make as many copies as you need (read burned CDs) they dont care as long as you dont install it on more comptuers than you have licenses for.

Ok, so it now turns my stuff legal... Cool, I tried to find the threads about how to enter in a new key, but couldn't... what should be my search thread?

right, there are a couple apps that will pull cd keys...

But, if you are realy interested in the legality of it, just call and ask MS, and if they agree about it ask them if they can supply you with a valid key. if your worried about being busted call from a library or pay phone or something, use a phone card you payed for with cash. As long as the liscence is for a same version of what you have/want installed then I doubt they realy will care a whole lot even though it was still illigal for you have been using it before obtaining the liscence. But I am no laywer. If they get too pissy about it just learn to use linux.

It's not like each cd has it's own key, any cd key will work as long as it's for the same exact version of w2k, you know server for server, professional for professional, student demo version for student demo version, etc etc... If you know somebody with the same version try using their key, if it don't work it don't work, then it's not a big loss... But of course the correct thing to do is contact MS itself.

Hmmm... you might have bought a key for a different version of win2K?

I remember having this problem when I was trying to use my OEM key on the store bought Win2K. The OEM key worked with the OEM CD and the store bought key worked with the store bought CD. Now I keep track of which key goes with what version. Else I just Tape the CD that came with my PC to the Case so I don't make a mistake :)
I think that even happened to me with Win 98...

I dont know that you've been "duped" that may be a legit key and if that's the case you really just have to get yourself a copy of the correct media (OEM vs. Retail vs. Volume Licensing).

I would recommend just calling MS customer service and asking. Tell them you bought this license of Win 2K however it didnt come with media so you want to know what kind of license it is to make sure you use the right media. I imagine they would be okay with that (although I've never tried). I doubt you will have any real problems as long as those are legit licenses.
