I was thinking about printing a few (20 at the most) shirts of my own design with the deftones name on them, then selling them on ebay....would that be highly illegal? or since it's my design would that not be a problem?

Yup. "Deftones" will be copyrighted, so you can't use it unless you get permission of the copyright holder.

Unless for some reason the band didn't copyright their name, which I really really doubt.
