Does anyone know what the minimum length of an assault rifle is for it to be legal? Does it vary by state?

I have an AK-74 that I pulled the stock off of, and it comes to 26.5" without it.

I've read 26" as legal some places, and 30" as the legal minimum on other websites. I live in pennsylvania in case it matters...

in PA the total length of any rifle must be at least 26" or longer
anything shorter and you need the tax stamp or something.

Cool... so I should be good to leave the stock off of it then.

so its just the barrel and receiver? i don't think it matters in that case. the fully assembled, working gun has to be 26" or longer.

I was just wondering about this myself, because I know about the 26" rule, but on the other hand you can't buy an M4 with a 14.5" barrel without the permanently affixed flash suppressor. So maybe there are two rules at work here. Or maybe the AK already has a 16" barrel so its moot. Either way, I would still like a true stubby M4 with a gas piston conversion for the best post-zombie survival gun.

ok, i kind of misunderstood what you meant. it might be ok. you could always throw a folding stock on there too.
