Is this illegal? Because I got lotsa DVDs and I had made back-up copies of some. Now will I be doing something illegal if I sell these DVDs (the originals) since I need the money?

Thanks.

If you included the back-up copy with the original, it's legal. Once you sell the DVD, you lose all licenses, meaning you can't keep a back-up copy. Of course, you probably wouldn't get caught, so your morals come into question.

According to the DMCA you aren't even supposed to break any copyright encryption. You obviously did if you ripped the DVD since there are no otherways to copy a movie.

That's a little different. Is there such a thing that "xeroxes" a DVD? If there is, and he used it, then that's fine. He'd still be doing something illegal if he held onto the movie after it was sold.

i have to agree. if you don't know that keeping "back-up" of a DVD you burned (making a back-up should be legal!) and selling the original is illegal then you are a dumb fvuck.

really what makes you think you can keep it?

i really wish we could make legal back-ups of DVD's. i hate having to treat the DVD's like they are glass because I'm so darn afraid of scratching them heh.

Edit: im a dork and cant spell!

yes it is illegal but i think the pertinent question is, "why should you care"

The legalities kind of fall apart when it's within your household.

I'm real new to DVDs and such, how would the law be different if something happens in your house?

well now. the act of murder itself is against the law. it has always been.

making a back-up has NOT always been against the law.just lately with the DMCA and other great laws.

It's not. Doesn't matter who makes the backup, what purpose it's for or where it's used, it's still illegal. With that said, I doubt that the MPAA is going to go after a guy who's making backups of DVD's he has bought but with them you never know. They prefer to treat their customers as criminals and make it illegal to make a backup of their DVD's. The MPAA & RIAA really don't like the idea of fair use for the consumer.
