What specifically causes leg cramps...mainly in the calf muscle. This morning i woke up to BOTH legs being EXTREMELY camped and it hurt like a b!tch. Is there something im missing from my diet or something that would cause this?

These are annoying, I instantly KICK out to straighten out my leg and swear for about 5 minutes.

It sucks!

Yeah, sometimes by leg will be sore all the next day from it. No amount of stretching/exercising can get rid of it.

I've heard the potassium thing before. Just bought a bunch of bananas so hopefully I'm good for a while. :)

Big toe cramps are quite as dramatic but still a bitch to deal with.

I don't eat a lot of bananas/potassium but that will be changing. I do take a multivitamin though?

I used to get those back when I swam (about 6000 yards daily) .....
I thought it was caused by a buildup of lactic acid in the muscles?

I found cranberry juice to be effective for combating cramps I once experienced nightly after starting a factory job a few years ago.

It's high in potassium, has many other beneficial nutrients and is more convenient than keeping fresh bananas around.

iirc, cramps can occur when you're dehydrated, right? since it's the morning, maybe you're dehydrated.

You can fix a cramp very easily by hopping out of bed and standing up. Well, I can. The act of standing up straight stretches the cramp right out very fast.

potassium, and water. Deficencies in both cause muscles to cramp. Thats what my doctor told me. Drink lots of OJ i guess.

for cramps in either the foot or the calf, grab your toes from above and pull up towards the knee.

Some football people say that drinking an ounce or two of pickle juice (basically vinegar and salt) is the best prevention. go figure...
