No surprise about this since Obama has been appointing people who have written books about how to monitor speech and to use the Trojan horse of diversity to "fix the markets" that leave libs high an dry since they can find a market.

Groups want FCC to police hate speech on talk radio, cable news networks

"The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is being urged to monitor "hate speech" on talk radio and cable broadcast networks.

A coalition of more than 30 organizations argue in a letter to the FCC that the Internet has made it harder for the public to separate the facts from bigotry masquerading as news.

The groups also charge that syndicated radio and cable television programs "masquerading as news" use hate as a profit model.

"As traditional media have become less diverse and less competitive, they have also grown less responsible and less responsive to the communities that they are supposed to serve," the organizations wrote to the FCC. "In this same atmosphere hate speech thrives, as hate has developed as a profit-model for syndicated radio and cable television program masquerading as 'news.'"

The organizations, which include Free Press, the Center for Media Justice, the Benton Foundation and Media Alliance, also argue that the anonymity of the Web gives ammunition to those that would spread hate.

The groups did not mention any specific programming on the right or the left in their letter, which supports a petition filed by the National Hispanic Media Coalition last year requesting a probe of the relationship between hate speech and hate crimes.

The groups argue the Internet has made it harder for the public to separate the facts from bigotry masquerading as news.

"The Internet gives the illusion that news sources have increased, but in fact there are fewer journalists employed now than ever before. Moreover, on the Internet, speakers can hide in the cloak of anonymity, emboldened to say things that they may not say in the public eye."

"For these reasons, as the Commission deliberates how the public interest will be served in the digital age, it should consider the extent of hate speech in media, and its effects."

Un-American scumbags. "hate speech" is a matter of perception, who decides?

Republicans think you're hateful if you give welfare because it destroys the soul, adversity makes you stronger and all that.
Democrats think you're hateful of you don't give welfare because people will starve.

Which is it and worse who decides?

Does anyone see anything wrong with the government telling us what's to be believed and what's not?

I like this comment and retort from site -
"The Tea Party is just the 21st century Ku Klux Klan."
"That's speech right there"

FCC "diversity czar" Mark Lloyd wrote a book about how to cripple talk radio (he hates Limbaugh - oh and he praised Chavez for his "democratic revolution" and courage in taking over opposition media.

Basically Lloyd wants to do to media what the Community Reinvestment Act did for banking. He wants broadcasters to have to prove they are promoting "diversity" or pay fines. Just as ACORN and other groups were given a say in how banks served minorities Lloyd wants broadcasters to be subject to local pressure groups. It's hoped that broadcasters wont want to risk the enormously high fines.

What these groups are asking for is obvioulsy just a set-up for Lloyd's ideas.

As the WSJ wrote:

"In 2007, while a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, a Democratic think tank with close ties to the Obama administration, Mr. Lloyd co-authored a report that proposed ways the FCC could change the balance of conservatives to progressives on talk radio by imposing new rules on the radio industry, such as more frequent license renewals and a national radio-ownership cap.

Mr. Lloyd has no authority to set policy at the FCC, and his appointment has drawn little reaction so far from companies. Nevertheless, his past statements have fueled an outcry among conservative commentators and lawmakers concerned that Mr. Lloyd's hiring signals the FCC will change rules to make it easier for interest groups unhappy with a local station's programming to threaten its license...

"He doesn't like corporate ownership of media," said Seton Motley, communications director of the Media Research Center, a conservative interest group that has been critical of Mr. Lloyd. "He wants to use the vast power of the FCC to hammerlock the radio industry."

I see the usual nutters have their daily dose o'rage boiling. It is therefore with great amusement that I will point out you've been duped again by the wing-nut propaganda machine. It preys on weak-minded ragers just like you who are too lazy to actually check sources and too insecure to step outside your echo chamber and expose yourselves to credible sources of information.

Contrary to the OP's title, they are NOT calling for any limitations whatsoever. They are asking the FCC to study the issue, to gather data. (Data is what thoughtful people use to assess the world and make informed decisions, FYI.) In fact, not only do they NOT call for limitations, they clearly and explicitly state they are only requesting a study. From the filing none of you read:
"To be clear, NHMC et al. is not asking – and will not ask – the Commission to compose any sort of content regulations pertaining to hate speech in media. Rather, NHMC et al. respectfully request that the Commission initiate an inquiry into the extent and effects of hate speech in media and to explore non-regulatory means by which to mitigate its negative impacts."
But don't let such inconvenient truths slow you down. The more you act like buffoons, the more you'll be dismissed as irrelevant.

What you really fear, or course, is that their complaint is right on target. Many of you offer perfect examples of how effective the hate-mongers are at manipulating bigots and fools. Heaven forbid there should be non-regulatory efforts to mitigate your brain washing.

I love what they define as "hate speech".

Who are they do decide what speech is "hate speech" and what the so called "negative impacts" are?

This is just a fresh spin on the fairness doctrine. The only point is to eliminate conservative political views. If this actually comes to pass, it will put us firmly on track to a totalitarian government, it's the only possible outcome. This is the one that would cause people to take up arms, it's the end of the "free press", it's the end of one of the most fundamental freedoms we have, and arguably the most important. We would welcome in the era of the thought police.
