Got up this morning and left the milk out, just realized it was sitting out a few mins ago. Does the rule apply that it smells good so it must be good apply?

Update: It is the next day and I used the milk in cereal for breakfast. It is now 4 hours later and there are no ill effects. I think I'm in the clear.

set at 71 degrees. it is skim milk, so that may have helped.

no lumps or nasty smell.

Taste it and see. No doubt the bacteria count is higher than when you took it out but, it won't kill you.

just drink it up soonest
before refridgerators, people left the milk can on the porch and drank it until it turned into yogurt

I have no idea whether it's safe, but I ran across an interesting quote while I was looking around:

"Flour is spoiled when it has moving rice in it, particularly if you didn't put rice in it."

If it was a nearly full gallon, I'd say its alright since it cooled much slower than say a quarter of a gallon. But hey if it doesn't taste or smell bad it should be good. Probably should plan on finishing it off a bit sooner than normal.

You know, it's worth about 75 cents. Do you really want to risk food poisoning for 75 cents?

Throw it out.

I think it's fine. People let their kids walk around with bottle of milk all morning drinking from that luke warm container. I'm sure it's fine.

In some cases, it might be worth a lot more to get food poisoning...

Go ahead & drink it, then after you're violently ill sue the milk co. for not putting a warning "do not consume after being left out in 71*F temps for 12+ hours".

It's fine for today. It'll be pretty ripe tomorrow. Fridge or not.

I think this is the best answer. What do you think? Salmonella is gonna get you? The only thing that's gonna grow in there is lactobacillus. It turns to yogurt or it gets sour. Even sour milk isn't going to make you sick, but it won't taste good. I wouldn't hesitate to drink it or cook with it.

It will be fine.. chill it by putting it in ice water if you can.. it will go bad more quickly than if it had been kept cool though.

At room temp itll take awhile for it to spoil depending on how long youve had it. It would take 12 hours at 90 degrees to spoil milk.
