Left a voicemail to HR, did I screw up?

I missed a phone call from HR yesterday morning around 8AM.
I wanted to research the position and gave her a call back at 10:30AM.
No one picked up so I left a voicemail but it was extremely short.

I said, "Hi X, this is X Y returning your phone call. Can you please call me back at xxx-xxx-xxxx when you get this message? thanks."

It's now Tuesday with the day almost over and I haven't heard a thing. One mistake was the grammar, I know I should have used "could". I also should've said more about what position I was calling back about and not sound rushed. Am I overanalyzing because it's a position that I really want in this economic downturn or was it a mistake on my part? I'm not very experienced with leaving VMs to HR and all of that.

Update 12/19: I called again but it went to voicemail. This recruiter probably screens all of her calls.
I left a more detailed VM this time but no response as the day is almost ending. Should I call again tomorrow? I don't want to come across as desperate or anything.
I do speak with a slight accent which could turn recruiters off but I usually do well on phone interviews.

Always always always say WTF you're talking about.

An HR person who is hiring is dealing with 100's of people, likely random staffing agencies, etc etc etc. I'm not really in HR but when I get a msg like that I assume spammer/sales call.

It's very tough to get quality interviews these days for a position that you're actually interested in. That's why I'm worried that I missed my chance with a poor first impression.

Did HR leave you a message, or did you just notice a missed call?

she left a voicemail with the name of the firm and position she wants to discuss with me

call back. they probably won't remember you being the guy that left the voice mail if their HR is staffed by more than 1 person.

I don't think the use of "can" instead of "could" is going to have any effect on you getting a call back, unless it was a position as a teacher or English Professor ;)

I'll call her back tomorrow in the AM.
Interviews are tough to come by these days, hopefully I can progress through it.

This is your ACTUAL biggest oops.

Hmm, I don't know. OP said he was returning HR's call. That's enough of a reference to subject matter. Something like "returning your call, with reference to blah blah" might have been more complete, but I don't see any mistake here.

But it's not like the OP and HR have some kind of strong relationship, so their name may not serve as a strong enough reference. As someone else mentioned, HR could confuse their call for a spammer/telemarketer.

OP,
You're overthinking it.

HR depts. are extremely disorganized so it's not a hit on you. They deal in dozens of calls/candidates.

Actually.....if they called you, you should call them every day until you get a response. It shows persistence and that you want the job. That is NEVER a bad thing in their eyes! Trust me.

Keep calling until they say "NO". Period.

Good luck!

A concur with dr150. HR depts in companies are usually a mess. The larger the company the bigger the mess.

You have no idea how many times I've been contacted by a recruiter and then nothing happens.

Recruiters talk to a ton of people a day and each person sometimes has hundreds of applicants.

You're unlikely to hear back from that recruiter again to be honest. You can call again. You won't sound desperate - trust me. If fact, it might be a positive on you to keep calling since that shows you're very interested.
