Valve has announced that the upcoming Left 4 Dead Survival Pack will be free

The pack, due this spring, introduces a new multiplayer game mode entitled, Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode (Death Toll, Dead Air). A Critic's Choice Edition of the game will be heading to retail stores this spring, and will include access to all the content introduced in the L4D: Survival Pack.

Meh? What is the price still too high or something?

Pretty predictable expansion which isnt a bad thing, im looking forward to completing the two other campaigns on versus, they will actually be kinda new to me since i didnt really bother with them much i always used to just play versus.

Wonder what "survival" will entail. Since basically the entire game and every mode in it is about survival i hope its somthing different and unexpected.

Good to hear it's not a premium thing.

The Survivor thing is hopefully well done. I would HATE if it was played in 'single file'; that is, one player plays the level at a time, survives as long as they can, then dies, and waits half an hour to play again.

I'm betting survival is a team vs team static defense mode. You know, 30 seconds to fortify a fixed position, then the director and the other team are unleashed upon you until you're dead, then you switch sides. Whichever team lasted longer wins.

Only question is really whether it will be based on which team had the longest lasting survivor, or if the score will be an average of all survivor's lifetimes. I'm betting the latter, given the team focus of the game.

Now if only they'd do something about the game's hamstrung match finding methods, I might go back to it someday.

If they did that, they may as well rip off Aliens vs. Predator by forcing the team to work together until the shit hits the fan.

I remember survivor in AvP2 and it was the craziest shit ever. Somehow, 15 humans snuggling in one corner with miniguns, autoguns, pulse rifles and grenade launchers could never hold off one alien; lag helped a bit. When it came down to less than 5 humans, I just remember starting to re-enact Hudson's final scene with loud yells of "mother****er!!!" until a praetorian spawned behind me. Oh, I hope they do rip it off:).

Such an update is certainly a good thing for a game that obviously lacks variety.

is the infected side not supposed to work as a team?

The only way points should factor in is if they include a time limit to make sure games don't go on forever (although they could very well get around this by simply ramping up the AI director with time, eventually producing 4 tanks if you actually need it), otherwise a single survivor deserves to win his team the round if the infected side is too inept to bring him down before their scored time as survivor.

Nothing said survival was going to be 8-player. I'm assuming its just 4-player, and it'll probably be the finales and other climax moments blocked off, and the hordes just keep coming till you die. Basically, I'm expecting a complete and total ripoff of horde mode from GoW 2. Which isnt a bad thing really, but I wish there was some kind of ranking, some kind of stat tracking etc....I need more carrots. :p
