The following specs and games are for analysis purposes.

System Specs:
-Intel Core2Duo 2.54ghz (e7200)
-EVGA geforce gt240 ddr5 512mb
-2 gigs of ddr2 ram
-300w psu
-dell 19in monitor 1440x900native
-Dell Inspiron 530 Mobo.
-600 gig harddrive
-Windows 7 64bit SP1
-All drivers are up to date.

Games I run (all past 60 fps unless noted):
-Alien Swarm at highest with 16xq csaa and 16xaf
-Left 4 Dead 1 at highest with 16xq csaa and 16xaf
-Dead Space 2 at highest with everything on in advanced settings
-GTA4 at medium textures and high everything else
Draw 20, detail 15, and vehicle 20 running at 30-45 fps
-Crysis 1 at high settings running at 30-25fps
-Unreal Tournament 3 at highest settings
-Orange Box at highest settings with 16xq csaa and 16xaf
-Call of Duty 5 at highest settings (no aa on due to bad console porting)

Ok. Now time to mention my problem.

Why does Left 4 Dead 2's framerate severely fluctuate on my computer?

What do I mean by fluctuate? My framerate goes from 60fps down to 0fps along with Audioloops when it freezes then goes back to 60fps. Repeat process. It happens at completely random times. Yes, thats right. You can't even time it. Note that this does NOT happen when I am playing Left 4 Dead 1.

Things I have tried:
-Testing on 32 bit os compared to 64 bit os
-Updating drivers
-Opening up my computer and screaming at it
-Deleting L4D2 and reinstalling it
-Turning off my antivirus
-Testing different settings

Help me guys! :O

I just tried one more thing in my feeble attempts.

54fps w/ 16xq csaa, 16xaf, no vsync, very high shaders, high effect, high model, multicore on, memory high.

40fps w/ 16xq csaa, 16xaf, no vsync, low shaders, low effect, low model, multicore on, memory high.

30fps w/ no aa, bilinear af, no vsync, low shaders, low effect, low model, multicore off, memory low.

What the fuck is going on here! :O

Try disabling sound in bios, worth a shot.

...Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 uses sound as context clues...i don't think thats such a good idea.

I reinstalled a clean copy of Windows 7 64bit last night.
I am taking every precaution so I can give the game some leniency. I got done redownloading everything I use on a daily basis and all of my steam games and Now I'm running a defrag. I'm noticing that Left 4 Dead 2 was highly fragmented when downloaded and installed on steam. Haven't even tried the game yet. Lets see if all goes well.

Pretty sure he's just talking about doing it for troubleshooting purposes. You know, to see if that's the problem? Not actually recommending it as a fix.

Because it's source engine. I've had random freeze ups in TF2 and CSS (and I think even HL2 rarely) for as long as I can remember on two different systems completely different than yours and each other. The game essentially 'lags out" for a moment then everything catches up if you wait a couple seconds.

ok i found a fix. problem is, the game was trying to load up everything at the wrong times. i did verify the integrity/cache/whatever its called. I used a program called smart defrag and it worked. it put everything in its place (im looking at you steam!) and now l4d2 runs smooth.

using removing sound all together in l4d is like running through the zombie apocalypse with your ears chopped off. not pretty.
