My bro downloads so much crap offline, and theres no stopping him, I've block almost all ports, except the AIM, HTTP, FTP, and Game server ports.. WHY can he still download with KaZaa.. Im going through a linux box as a gateway to do all this, and he is still downloading show and movies via Bit torrent, but its still getting through, and using up all the upload speed we got here at home, and everyone is pissed and can't get him to stop.

I have a squid proxy server setup via transparent so he don't know about it, how can I get it to drop all non http traffic?

gah WTF, I even limited him to 10, he doesn't repond to reason or force, ARGH! It shouldn't be able too, im gonna use Squid to block file extensions!

Sounds like a personell issue. Some form of punishment is in order.

Just block his IP. When he comes cryin just say "dude, do that sh!t when we're sleeping. But NOT while we're here"

Say while shaking a firm fist like home simpson.

Well right now he is limited to like 1kb/s so I don't mind, he can download slower than molassis if thats how you spell it 😛

This is a new toolset in early development for linux which will disallow all network traffic from a computer that's running Kazaa. Within a couple minutes after the user quits the program, network access is restored. The author states that that's pretty much the only way that Kazaa2 can be dealt with (though I thought Packeteer could recognize it and do ratelimiting on it?). Anyway, that's one way to take care of him if he's using Kazaa, iMesh, or Grokster.

The next thing to do is use the iproute2 tools in linux and start doing QoS on your network. You install the Layer 7 filtering tools from http://l7-filter.sourceforge.net/ and set up some U32 filters for whatever kind of traffic he's creating (they have filters for bittorrent, aim, ftp, gnutella, kazaa, and a bunch of others now) and prioritize the stuff below everything else and give him about 1K/s or whatever you feel is appropritate. (Don't ask why these authors can ratelimit kazaa2 and the other says he can't 🙂)

If you don't feel like doing what I mentioned above (I never have personally installed either of those 2 things) just get some normal QoS stuff going on your linux router http://www.lartc.org. Use their wondershaper example and watch the traffic until you come up with good rates...

"User education" is definitely a quicker and easier (unless he's bigger than you) method in thise case. 🙂

is the problem uploading or downlaoding or what?

just cut him off completely and make him learn.
